As much as we like the idea of a car that’s only available with a manual transmission, it’s not exactly a solid sales strategy in the U.S. So it’s probably smart of Ford to add an automatic-transmission option to the 1.0-liter three-cylinder-equipped Ford Focus for 2016. Previously available with only a six-speed manual transmission, this […]

I wouldn't call it carried over, its missing the 17 inch wheels, spoiler, ground effects, leather wrapped wheel etc. you can get 17 inch wheels but they are the all black ones and are extra cost now. except for the cooler headlights I think the new package is a step backwards.

What package are you referring to?

I had seen info. that the same "Sport package" avail. for the manual version last year was now ONLY avail. for the automatic models.

It's def. an extra cost option over the base model that has none of those extras.

the car shown in car and driver did not carry over to 2016, you can only get that style of sport package on the 2.0 now,the ground effects and spoiler were only on the 2015 ecoboost sport package, now the only package is the one with the non honeycomb all black grille, black headlights etc and comes with the darker 16 wheels, no spoiler included.

[thankyou]

The most recent Road and Track magazine published just talked very well about the Focus RS. All these magazines used to be very good, because (back in my day ....) in the 90's that is pretty much all you had to get information from. Once the internet boomed magazines pretty much became extinct like cassette tapes.

Back to the car though, it is sad they force options that some might not want on cars to get certain packages or things...... I personally do not think the 1.0 should be hooked to an auto.

Yes my stick has power to climb hills , but the car is slow. 18.6 1/4 mile slow with short shifter, k&n replacement, and muffler delete(3hp/6tq). Slap an auto onto a stock 1.0......... I am pretty sure I would hate this car with an auto, personal opinion of course but there just is not enough power and the car wouldn't be as fun because of the loss of extra power.

The 1.0 tuned with a few mods, putting down 160+hp to the wheels, an auto would be just fine.

As for the cosmetics, I want a black grille on mine, but I dislike horizontal grilles, I prefer honeycomb. (I disliked this generation focus until the changes in 2015 and never liked focus's until now)

Then the fact that an auto is put in the "Sport" package is funny[?|] [facepalm] and it's also just a regular auto trans too. As much as I hate CVT's , the last one I did drive I thought that a better CVT would work great on the 1.0. Especially for mpg, would be slow as all hell, but way better mpg by being able to just hold 1500 or so rpms while accelerating.

Just to ask= Whats the purpose of getting a 1L ecoboost? mpg, yea I get that, but w/ a auto? You have a motor that has great potential for performance/mpg & then tack on a auto for what, seems like 1 step forward & 2 steps back.

The 1.0 EcoBoost is a great all around performer, not just for the MPG, IMO.
And nothing wrong with the 6F15 transmission paired with the 1.0 EB.

I would choose it (1.0 EB) all day long versus the 2.0L . Nothing wrong with the 2.0L, but I really enjoy how the 1.0 EB performs.

Nice to have the choice for consumers.

Guess you didn't hear the mk IV is going to get bigger, good for sedans/wagons, but not for hatchs/ST's so the ST will stay w/ the mk3/3.5 dimensions. Why would anyone need a bigger hatch? Least some vehicles aren't growing out of proportions.[hihi]

Coil springs in a half ton P/U is an easy guess, Chevy already did it in the 60's.

Unibody P/U for Ford is possible, considering Honda's Ridgeline. Where it might fall in the lineup is a question, could use the F150 name but it wouldn't be a great fit as that one has grown. Last time they did an "aero" lightweight F150 it wasn't too popular.

Fuel economy standards drives many of the decisions, they'll be offering less expensive options & more powerful ones as well for as long as possible.

Makes more sense for a box van, though they kept frame versions for the cab/chassis type. Reduced towing capacity for the unibodies.

Haven't found good pictures of the design, figure it's what could be described as "body on frame" with major beams included. That idea I first remember with AMC Eagles, where extra frame stiffness beyond a unibody was needed.

Still can't see it for large pickups, body on frame works so well for varied configurations & strength for unique tasks like towing options.

You've got an advantage with ones to look at directly, Ford's literature says that nice straight frame from behind the cab extends through to the front bumper but I didn't find any pictures of the arrangement to see what the front section looked like (Bumper to bumper frame).

It'd be interesting to see the similarities/differences between the cab/chassis and the full unibody.

While we're talking about future engine choices, how about Ford's new ecoblue diesel?
Root Site - Don't Use This Site
It will be in the U.S., and likely in some euro-spec foci. But will the U.S. finally get a diesel focus?
Not likely to see a Diesel in the Focus any time soon thanks to VW's ill advised death knell to Diesel in the USA for passenger vehicles (not trucks and commercial vehicles where it makes some sense), plus the emissions regulations here especially driven by California have put up significant road blocks to manufacturers wanting to put a Diesel engine in their passenger car lines. Plus they just don't sell all that well here..

Also at least as of tonight Motor Trend is off line, so I'm not sure why they would speculate on a European market engine making it here any time soon.

Doubt that it will go into the Transit here as opposed to the 3.2L I5 as the Diesel option either unless it can make the same power and torque figures with less mass, so not sure what vehicle a 1.5L or 2.0L EcoBlue diesel engine would fit into while still selling here in the states.

Diesel fuel is more energy dense and less thoroughly refined compared to gasoline, and the compression ignition engine produces lower CO2 emissions through the use of less fuel generally, but there are trade offs and cleaning up the NOx emissions does require the use of an SCR system on top of the particulate filters and oxidation catalysts which adds complexity and cost.

If you drive a lot though having the range and efficiency advantages will be very useful.

Would we see a diesel Focus or Fusion before we saw something to compete with either the Canyon/Colorado "duramax" 2.8L I4 diesel, the 3.0L FCA Ram EcoDiesel, or the 5.0L Cummins V8 diesel in the form of something like a rumored Ranger/Bronco type vehicle, or something like a 150 series truck?

I kind of have my doubts, even if it would be quite torquey.

Adds up to me.

Europe started emissions regulations later than the U.S., and focused on CO2 emissions (greenhouse gas) so the diesels were attractive in that environment. U.S. rules started in CA, with a focus on NOx which isn't regulated the same way in Europe.

That's why the Euro diesels have to add SCR for the American market, and VW tried to avoid that (some truck engine makers tried the same thing, one even used temp. emissions 'credits' to get away without it for a few years while publicly claiming their engines didn't need it).

Extra costs aren't limited to purchase price, particulate filters have shown to be quite a maint. headache so far.

Sorry I should have mentioned that my brother is in Ottawa, Ontario Canada, hence have the same restrictive Focus spec'd models as the USA.
aka 1.0L EcoBoost Appearance Pak offered only in Focus sedan variant.

But yes you are correct, where I am at the Focus is offered in a multiple assortment of flavors

Saw the "Territory: (+) "CDN"" to show the location in the details.

Kinda unique combo there, could be one of very few but hard to guess.
Good catch on the CDN, also EU Focus VIN begin with W for the Saarlouis Germany Assembly Plant

When does Ford N.A Job 2 generally happen? Maybe with Job 2 the hatch has been added to the EB Appearance Pak choice.

Still does not show up on either Ford.com or Ford.ca websites Build & Configure tool, even when selecting the 16" paint pocket wheels. Just the sedan variant.
