How to replace PCV in PZEV Focus 2.3L Duratec?

The local ford dealership believes the cause of rough idle in our 2003 PZEV Focus is the PCV valve. It does make some sense as the car runs fairly well until it warms up and then idles REALLY rough. What also fits with a sticky PCV diagnosis is that it drives just fine once you get past idle even when idle sounds like a rod is going to break. What does not fit so well is the observation that it occasionally it struggles to accelerate.

The OBDII codes have been little help - random misfire, misfire in first 1000 cycles, misfire in cylinders 2/3/4, and lean condition.

The stealership quouted almost $600 to replace the PCV because (according to the service writer) "the car is running lean because it isn't getting enough oxygen, due to the PCV valve being bad. Air is going back around in it." That makes no sense and frankly I don't trust them.

Has anyone replaced the PCV on a PZEV 2.3L Duratec Focus? What is involved? Pictures would be highly appreciated. The parts are on order and I'm getting psyched to jam my big clumsy hands into that teeny weeny engine bay.

Thank you in advance! [wiggle]

Before you start taking anything apart you should check for vacuum leaks on the hoses that run to and from the two identical solenoids on the top of your intake manifold. That's probably more likely than the pcv.

The pcv valve is behind the intake manifold and the whole intake manifold needs to be removed to replace it. Also more likely than the pcv valve being bad is that the pcv hose may be dry rotted and cracked, it's a very common problem with the d23.

Pull starter?

Thanks for posting the link to the PCV repair. I wonder if the repair would be easier if the starter was removed. Instead of removing the manifold, from looking at the pictures, it looks like the starter is the only thing in the way from replacing the PCV line from the underneith the car.

While this is not the oldest thread I've seen brought back, it is a few months old. You should probably start your own thread asking questions about PCV removal, and be sure to put Duratec in the title.

Anyone who HAS replaced the 2.0/2.3L duratec PCV hose without removing the intake manifold should post a how-to. This is a very common failure and there would be A LOT of interest in how to replace it WITHOUT removing the IM.

While I have the 2.0 Duratec. Doing a Google search as to where and how to change the PCV, seems to be an act of Congress.
So far my Focus is running fine, but I plan on driving this car until it completely falls apart. So next month at about 72K. I am going to go through the maintenance, coolant change, plugs, gas filter which will have over 15K on it etc.
I never thought to change the PCV since I did not know it had one, after all it has the ridiculous lifetime air filter.
This forum has been very informative and helpful for keeping my Focus running well,so thank-you for that.
After all " 200K is the new 100K". ;-)

I used this from the how to archive (Intake Manifold Removal and PCV - Duratec by blueoval23) It is very informative and not nearly as hard as it looks. The pictures dont show it all but if you read it (reading is fundimental) it explains it really well. two clips for the radiator fan, four bolts for the radiator to lower and then it is just a matter of unbolting the Intake and removing it. I am putting in a new intake gasket since mine has a butt load of miles on it. (Just got the car Feb 1st) and replacing the hose and pcv.
