Front end ticking noise when braking

Looking for some insight here.

As I am slowing down, I hear a slight "tick, tick, tick" noise from the front end. Generally occurs below 20 KM/Hr or 12 MPH. Brakes applied "normal" (not hard or soft). Tick sound slows as the car slows, so it must be rotational. Noticeable until the car stops and occasionally when releasing the brakes as well. Service guys are clueless; think possibly CV's. Car has 19K KM (~12000 miles). Anyone else have any ideas?

JasDmw,

I have the exact same issue/concern. I have a brand new 2014 with only 300 miles on the car, manual transmission, and when I push the brakes to slow down (clutch depressed and under 15 mph), I hear and feel a very slight tick, tick, tick when coming to a stop.

Being brand new, I don't think anything is wrong, but I wondered if it was something to do with the ABS system or that's just how they brake.

I haven't noticed it when releasing the brake or when turning the wheel, just when applying the brakes at low speed.

Does anyone know if this just normal?

Welcome to the forum! [welcome]

The PowerShift 6 Speed Transmission is designed to provide the feel and efficiency of a manual transmission with the easy driving of an automatic. The PowerShift transmission automatically engages the next gear in anticipation of the shift, providing seamless shifting. It also has neutral idling, which disengages the transmission when sitting at idle, and helps to maximize fuel efficiency.

Because the PowerShift 6 Speed Transmission operates similarly to a manual transmission, you may notice some characteristics that provide a unique driving experience from the automatic transmission you may be used to:

  • When you take your foot off the accelerator pedal and the vehicle begins to slow down you may perceive a light to medium braking sensation as the transmissions makes adjustments.
  • During the break in period, the transmission may shift quicker or harder. This will smooth out after a short period of time.
  • You may hear mechanical noises when driving.
  • You may feel a difference when pulling away from a stop.
Some vehicles may also be equipped with Select Shift, which allows you to manually shift gears by selecting the plus and minus buttons on your vehicle's toggle switch when the vehicle is in the Sport Mode (S on the shift column). Check out this video for more.

A follow up,

So I wanted to see if the issue was with braking or with the clutch depressed when braking. When braking to a stop, with the car in neutral and the clutch disengaged, I didn't feel the ticking.

So I am wondering if depressing the clutch while coming to a stop is causing the tick, tick, tick. At lunch today I'm going to experiment and see how exactly that tick is coming.

And yes, I have a 5 speed and I love it.

I have a '13 TI with the select shift; it's not transmission related However, it's mostly gone now, like some of the other gremlins; rattle in the headliner and another in the dash area. All seem to come and go. Pretty frustrating when a dealer charges $30.00 when they can't find an issue.

Yeah, I have noticed the head liner issue as well, had dealer (under warranty) fix it the first time but lately it has resurfaced, I just push on it and it goes away (poor design)....it may because of the moon roof...and the dash rattling seems to come and go since they replaced it. Luckily,
I have till Valentine's day 2016 to get all fixed before warranty expires as well as Sync.

So I had a similar sound coming from my front end a few months ago. It was right after a tire rotation and the fix for the clunk on the front end. Not sure if it was a tick or a rubbing noise but same scenario as you guys.

All I did was retorque the wheels and it helped... No joke. Easy first thing to try at least. Can't hurt anyway

Don't know... the first time last year they said the cam cover wasn't tight enough and was not factory spec, they adjusted that and said to wait if this fix the problem...

Came back 2-3 weeks later and they said the head gasket was leaking so they changed it.

During the winter, I put my engine cover on so the engine get hot faster...
When the winter is over, 2-3 weeks ago, I remove my engine cover (with the cover you don't see the top of the engine), I saw that there's still oil there. The bay/engine was cleaned before winter with zero oil on it. Something is leaking...

Poor descriptions apparently given to you don't help.

Felix questioned 'head gasket" because that is a MAJOR item compared to the cam cover gasket pictured that's seeping.

They both relate to the head, but pulling a cam cover is a simple job & a common issue compared to pulling the whole head to replace the head to block gasket.

Mine is leaking too (so does other people here) if that makes you feel less alone! :)

But it's so minor that it's stay dry!

Valve cover leaking is not a big thing ... head gasket however i'm very surprised!
