Adding backup camera

Hi, this thread is of interest to me, here in the UK as we neither have the camera as an option nor MFT as all we have is DAB radio/CD's at present. Now on the C-Max, based upon the Mk3 Focus, there is a option to have a Sony system with a camera, thus I am interested in how a camera might be connected up.

I contacted a few dealerships near me and none of them said they thought it was possible. But they didn't seem to care enough to do any real research. I contacted Ford and they just kept telling me to contact a local dealer, even after I told them I contacted three already. [:(!]

The camera probably records at like 640x480 (which is standard television resolution and not high-res by any means). I doubt you'd be able to find many cameras that record at a lower resolution.

Lol, you're funny. I don't know about you, but the MFT in my car is not the size of a TV. It's about the highest res screen to ever come out of a factory on any production vehicle. In contrast it's roughly 4-5 times the resolution of that in my BMW or any of my previous autos as well as yours. If you have nav, you should be awe stricken at the amount of detail this screen shows. I doubt you're finding backup cam with 640x480 AND the proper lens to match. The sensor in the cam may be capable but if the lens is crap, so will the be the output on the screen. Oh, and just between you and me, it *doesn't* actually record anything...

Now with that said, it's really not that big of deal anyway. As long as you can what's behind you, that's all that matters. Never mind too much about what I may have said in my earlier post, it's not like your watching movies play out behind your car or anything :)

800x378 resolution in an eight inch format is pretty high res in my book. I don't know what the stock camera specs are but I don't really care as long as I have a wide angle view of what's behind me while backing up.

This isn't as easy as plugging in a camera to the back of the head unit.

Confirmed in the shop manual: There is a camera interface module located in the trunk area of the car. That interface goes into a harness that leads up front to the head unit harness. Then, MyFord Touch needs to have the software loaded to the as built version with rear view camera.

So do you know if the interface module is part number 19H405? I was able to locate this and the camera (19G490) on fordparts.com. Would just these two pieces (along with the software update to MFT) be all that is required? Thanks for all your help!

I am not trying to make a fully functional backup camera per the manual. Just looking for simple video. Every display unit on the planet has video input otherwise what good would it be. Hook a camera up to video in and and apply power from the reverse lights wiring and it should work.

I have some video test equipment at work and I should be able to test the ability of the system to accept a display pattern or not. The software just switches inputs to the video and engages the rear sensors.

Are you speaking of using the RCA input in the armrest? I thought that I read on here that it will only work while in park.

No, not the arm rest rca's. There has to be a dedicated input for the backup camera somewhere in the trunk. My cars on order so I can't do anything until it gets here. Anyone else find the video input for the camera?

I removed the truck lid cover when I tinted my tails and wasn't able to locate anything, but I didn't check thoroughly. Any idea what exactly to look for? Would it just be wiring? I can check again tonight.

The power to the camera probably comes from the reverse light wiring harness. I am guessing that the camera video cable would already be run to the rear trunk area somewhere or there is an unattached molded plug of some kind back there. Even if the cables were not run for video there has to be some place to tap into it somewhere. Might have to go all the way back to the touch screen if necessary. In any case, there has to be a way to do this to at least get video when in reverse.

My dealer keeps telling me it isnt possible. I removed the trunk liner to see if anything looked to be prewired and couldnt find anything. Dont want to spend the $250 or so on the camera without any idea of it being possible. :(

I looked on fordparts.com and the wiring harnesses (3 of them) from the dash, through the interior and the trunk area are different depending on if you ordered with the camera or not. The wiring is not there for the power or the video. All of the wiring harnesses throughout the car are feature specific. So they did not use a universal wiring harness for these cars.....[?|]
