touchy brake

Any idea why the brake is so touchy? I still have less than 1k miles, and I'm hoping this may be why. It seems that when I am going very slow, or backing up, I can't stop smoothly. There's just a sudden stop in the last half mph if that makes sense. Anyone else experience it?

Thanks

I've only had my car for a couple weeks and I already have about 700 miles on it. If it doesn't get better by the time I go in for my first oil change I will ask them about it.

BTW, when do you take it in for the first change? I'm not comfortable with waiting until 5k miles like the dealer says to. Is 3k too early?

I don't think they are that touchy. I think they are perfect and I am able to stop smoothly. The brakes on my car have saved me from rear-ending a few people because people don't pay attention (using their damn phone) and make very last minute turns. Try the brakes on a new Honda Accord, they are so touchy its ridiculous, enough to eliminate that car when I was car shopping.

Try easing off the brake pedal slightly as you're nearing the end of your stopping. That's how you're supposed to do it.

Perhaps you're used to some other maker's cars? I used to be terrified of driving my dad's Honda Accord because the brakes were so weak. That was in comparison to my 94 Aerostar at the time.

Am I the only one who thinks it's funny that people complain because their brakes are too good instead of modulating their foot on the pedal to account for more aggressive braking? Which one would you want in an emergency situation?

I have to admit, with my upgraded brakes on my car, I watch what's behind me when I have to brake suddenly. I don't know what my actual braking is, but I was behind a Corvette and we both had to make an emergency stop to 0 from about 50, and I didn't get any closer to his car.

4 wheel disk brakes can be a bit grabby for the first while untill the pads bed themselves in.
Maybe you just need to modulate the pressure you are applying to the pedal as 4 wheel disc brakes provide much better feedback. They dont have the spongy feel of drum brakes.
Take it in to the dealer if you think its a problem.

Take the car out on a deserted freeway and get up to say 85mph, then hit the braakes kind of hard and slow down hard(only if no other traffic) to say 40mph.. (at that high speed your brakes will NOT lock up..)
This will make your brakes heat up and 'clear off' any stuff on them.
I used to do this regulary (once a year or so) on my Contour SVT, except i would go up to 130mph or so.. Then hit them as hard as i could.. It really turned into air brakes the first two times, from junk gassing off the pads. But after that never any issues stopping.
As long as no one else driving near you not so much of an issue.
Late night, around me, mainly after 11Pm is nobody on freeway at all, weekdays. Skip bar closing time.. LOL
Feel free to call me insane etc.. i did it, no problem. [smackbum]

Yea, it got worse with the last update. I lurch in slow traffic
I only find them touchy in stop and go traffic...
I have the same feeling the last half a mile an hour or so in stop and go traffic is just kind of touchy. It's just different than any feel I've experinced in any of my other cars over the years, from sports cars to SUV's.
It requires a slight break-in period, even after the update. If it doesn't find the groove soon, I'll escalate this with your Customer Service Managers; please PM me your VIN, mileage, phone number, and dealer info at that time.

I've got 4700 miles on mine. I'm taking mine in for the oil change at 5k...After all they are paying for any warranty issues, so I think it's safe to use the recommended service intervals.
View your Owner Guide for complete details on recommended service intervals. Our Ford Owner site also has a maintenance schedule you can follow: http://owner.ford.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Owner/Page/MaintCalProcessPage.

I've got 1,500 on mine and the brakes have been fine from the beginning. In fact they are a little better now that they are "breaking" in. [:p]
i don't find my brakes touchy but they do require a slightly different 'feathering' than other cars i've driven for smooth braking..

Not sure I'll slam the brakes at 130 haha
Hey everyone -

Thanks for all of the advice! [thumb] Remind me not drive behind Elizabeth at night; let's put the brakes on her thrill-seeking. [:)]

I drove my previous car for a decade and had a hard time adjusting to the brakes on my new 2012 Focus. Getting accustomed to the pedal was the biggest challenge for me. The extremely responsive four-wheel disc brakes are a blessing and a luxury; I consider myself broken-in.
