Alright so the other day my car started making this faint knocking noise. It only starts doing it when its idling. Its not real loud but you can hear it inside the car. I left the car running and unplugged a spark plug as to see if the noise would stop but it didnt. So it cant be nothing inside wise like pistons or anything like that. Idk what it is? Has this happened to you?

If it's a rod knock, you need to unplug all the spark plugs one at a time. If the noise goes away with a certain plug, that's a good indication that cylinder has a problem. A loose flywheel can make knocking sounds. If you get a mechanic's stethoscope you may be able to hear the noise better.

That year should have a power-train warranty still.....so you might luck out. Check it yourself first and it might save you a diagnosis charge somewhere. Knocking sounds are usually expensive to fix.

Which car? You have 2 from what I can see.

The Duratecs have had some noise related to the throwout bearing in manual trans vehicles. If you have an auto, or the sound doesn't go away when you engage the clutch, then it's most likely the lower motor mount. Perform a motor mount test, and if it fails- do a visual check to see which mount is damaged. You'll have to remove the battery to get a good look at the engine/transaxle mount. You should be able to see a rip or tear in the upper mount while doing the mount test. The lower dogbone mount will thunk, or if it's not that bad, process of elimination.

I have a manual transmission. It does it when its just idling in neutral. Fully warmed up and cold, it makes the noise. I listened real closely and it sounds like its coming from under the fuel rail-ish area?

Oh and its my d-tec.

the my car just barely past 50000 yesterday. The only work that has been done is the oil changes. And i do them myself. As for in the life of the car, i have not a slightest clue. Is there a place where you can check that stuff for free? As i am the second owner to a couple a couple of towns from me.
