I had a similar problem on my 2000 ZX3. the first time it was the Muffler bracket that was broken and the pipes were hitting the underside of the floor. A year after same noise..this time they found the bushings on the tables and suspension system crumbled . They tell me it's gonna have to be renewed entirely and the job costs like $1200 cdn because they can't just change the grommets and bushings only..[bigcry]

I'm still driving the same way (with the noise) and when I get the money, I'll do it myself. If I don't sell the car by then. Alot of people are asking me for my ZTec engine..LOLLL

Its usually the upper mount where the shocks go through the body, the tend to give quite a bit under hard compression and make rattleing noises.

Get under there and start grabbing stuff- shocks and sway bar end links if you have them. You should be able to make things move if it's rattling going over bumps. I've also bounced the bumper to check the rear shocks- if you get it moving as much as possible, then stop- it should rise up and settle immediately. If it bounces even a little, then that's a sign of a bad shock.

Now that I think about it, I have an Estate, so I can grab my shocks, but you won't be able to. Check the shock mount bolt at the top of the shock- you'll need an allen wrench and an offset wrench.
