Inner CV joint play

Hi,

i got this Focus 2009 1.6 petrol, 110.000 miles, it was gurgling and vibrating pretty loudly on acceleration, especially noticeably uphill, even with a moderate load.

Replacing the front (rear) bushes, which were totally shot, helped quite some, but the real change came with replacing all engine and transmission mounts. Drove and sounded almost like a new car - for 4 months.

Now the sound is coming back. it's subtle, but it's there. Hard to tell exactly from the cabin, but sounds like center bottom to passanger footwell.

the passanger side driveshaft has no noticeable up/down play, middle support bearing holds well in place.

The shorter, drivers side shaft does have noticeable u&d play.. ---> take a look "https://streamable.com/49p4z"

is this normal or at least non-critical?

Thanks!

You mean the inner or the outer CV? i'm not sure the inner can be tested that way.
There is seems to be no sound that i'm aware of, will have to pay more attention tomorrow.

The shaft itself where it plugs into the trans often has some flop up and down, it's spline play. The other side would show it too if not locked in place up and down by the bearing plate.

Normal.

Look at the pass side engine mount, commonly they go bad that quick and even quicker and moreso if it was not a Ford brand mount. Many give trouble in a week, I've seen them do it even brand new. If you can feel it anywhere on pass side of car like floorboard then it for sure.

The aftermarket rather than build mounts as close to tolerance as Ford gave up to make them crap to make more money, nobody can touch that pass side mount in operation other than by dead -ss luck. Why we push official Ford mounts so hard there.
Ok thanks.
Is the spline play there by default, out of the factory, or does it "develop" over time and road impact? Can bad bushes and mounts contribute to accelerated wear?

Will need to ride as a passanger, a bit hard to tell while driving.

I tried my best not to skimp on the parts, minus buying the originals...If they had a bit more reasonable prices, i would .
but they quoted me around 600€ for all the mounts and front bushings. A bit much if you ask me.
I did however take the time to get the "next best" ... or maybe not ..
The car, according to the VIN decoder, was build in the German factory. I've read on them german forums that Lemförder is supposed to be the OEM for Ford Europe, or at least was back then. So i ordered what Lemförder parts i could.

The original control arm ball joints have the same owl logotype as the Lemförders i bought for spare parts. The control arm bushes which i replaced were also Lem., looking identical. Changed those and had a wheel alignment - even wife said it rides like a formula.

Then the pasenger engine mount was Lem's - expensive too, like almost 4 times the price of the cheapo-mounts, still 30% cheaper than originals... Looks very very similar to the OE - both are hydraulic, filled with oil, apart of the cheap, rubber only mounts.

Unfortunately i could not source Lem's for the driver side / tranny mount and the rear one,. ...
those i bought as expensive as there was, also reading reviews on their forums, for which aftermarket companies are worth a look.

Well... [scratch] i once heard that OEM parts are different than OE by more than just the Company logo mark? Even if it's the same factory, the OE first install and OEM parts are supposedly not the exact same part (rank, quality)..
do you think or know this to be true?

Thanks again.

Is the spline play is in the spider gears or on the driveshaft splines? I'm asking because if i were to replace the driveshaft, would this play still be present?

Could the bad mounts have contributed to spline play?

The passanger mount is a Lemförder, (former?) OEM for Ford (the car was built in Germany according to the VIN),
and were expensive - still 35% cheaper than a Ford part,
but still 2-3 times the price of cheaper aftermarket mounts..

Many thanks for your reponse!

BRAND NEW cars will have most of that slop, it is a stackup of tolerances, not just one only there, you have at least 3 added together and must have each to not break parts.

Yes, replace driveshaft and virtually all of the slop will still be there.
