Did my first oil change on 2014 Focus SE. was easy (thanks to the info on this site). but have one hiccup.

prior to me changing the oil the car was dealer serviced only (22,000 miles) (castrol?).

yesterday and today, after it had been sitting for a few hours its making a pretty loud valve tapping noise when it's initially started up, then it goes away after a few seconds. oil level is perfect. i used M1 5w-20. im not sure if its valve tapping, im not familiar with this car yet. could be lifters, i dunno, but i know it doesnt sound right.

Against my better judgement i rushed and used a M1 extended life oil filter from local parts place. from what im reading maybe i should have used the Ford oil filter? my plan is to grab one from the dealer and swap the filter today.

has anyone run into this?
its a rapid clack clack clack clack noise for 5 very long seconds.

obligatory pictures :)

Is the red oil light on while the clacking noise is occurring? This certainly sounds like it is oil starved on start up. Try this, take off the M1 filter and screw on a Motorcraft FL-910S filter. I would preload the filter with oil prior to installing it. When preloaded with oil, it should only make racket for a second or two and then stop. Subsequent starts should produce no noise. The M1 oil should not be a problem.

No red lights thankfully
Def seems like a drain back issue. The M1 filter was wet w a drip at the bottom before I took it off just now - Eeek. Maybe I over tightened it. I don't like using non OE filters anyways. Spun on the pre-filled FL-910S and hand tightened only. No noise on start up. Will try again in a few hours to make sure it's okay.

Thanks again guys

OEM filter all the way on these cars, IMO. I'll never use anything but OEM after losing a motor to a quickie oil change place's generic white can filter.

Side note:
I want your mini-lift. Thumbs up on the Porsche too.

The filter you used may have had the wrong kind of antidrain plug. Or that particular one was damaged and not working properly. (You definitely did the right thing replacing it!!!)
When you write M1 I am assuming Mobil One??
I use the Mobil One replacement for the Motorcraft 400S (which is the same diameter, but longer, and the Mobil is even longer yet than the current 400S (This is on my ST3, not a MK3 regular engine)

So usually no problem with Mobil One filters.. Ditto Mobil One oil.
Or did M1 mean some other???

Also the store may have sold you the wrong M1 filter for your car....

Finally the Motorcraft filters are excellent filters for the MK3 engine. A more expensive aftermarket one is not really much better..

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the anti-drain back feature should have any effect on a car with a vertical(right side up) oriented filter?

Without analyzing it more carefully I'd guess that it could still cause a problem because the oil passages in the engine are above the level of the valve in the filter so the weight of the oil could still push down past the valve if it isn't working right. (Likewise, someone correct me if I'm wrong.)

Thanks everyone, things are back to normal here. im just a dumba#s i must have spun it on too tight or something. the motorcraft filter is on, the car sat for 6 hours and started up totally fine. no noises.

When i took the Mobile One oil filter off i took a close look at the top seal, it looked ever so slightly deformed in one spot, barely. I had put it on hand tight, then added an 8th of a turn with the filter wrench, i guess this was too much. i was surprised when i took the engine cover off to see the filter was wet with oil :( I think this may have allowed some of the oil to drain out of the head when it was sitting, resulting in the noise i heard.

when i put the motorcraft one on i only used my hands this time, lesson learned, i was feeling pretty defeated for a while there haha!

Hand tight only, after putting a small amount of oil on the rubber seal on the filter.

interesting illustration. im a factory filter advocate, i used the aftermarket one only in this case cause i was rushing and figured it wouldnt matter, having said all that... pure speculation here, but wouldnt the M1 filter have similar drain back check valve?

I don't know what the problem was, but it wasn't putting on the filter too tight. Normal installation instructions are to tighten 3/4 to 1 turn after the gasket contacts the filter base - you may be able to do this by hand but may require a wrench. A too tight filter would compress the gasket by tiny amount that would have no effect on its performance.
well... i spun it by hand until i couldnt turn it by hand further THEN added an 8th with the wrench, not one of my brighter moments. the gasket on the M1 filter was taller than that of the Ford one. while the filter wasnt spewing oil it must have been weeping cause it was wet with oil on the outside when i went to remove it after about 2 miles of driving. ng....

the metal is so thin on the filter, the wrench adapter is only holding the bottom half inch of the filter, probably contorting it from the top to bottom. (fun fact: the focus oil filter adapter is the same size as the #2 oil filter on a 993 :) )

public service announcement only use your hands!

i have the adapter because on my other car you cannot reach the 2nd oil filter with you hands.

Sounds like you oil check valve is way higher than normal on startup you need a filter at 8 psi oil bypass. Your filter may be higher causing oil starvation in the start up.

Just don't use a Fram......

And, oh, everything I have ever read outside of websites like this has said to put an oil filter on hand tight after lubricating the rubber seal ring.

Of course this happens while I'm out of state...

There have been no recourrances, the car has been used daily. Until today....
Back to square one.

Her car sat at work for three days. She returned to it and when she started it, she said it made the same noise again.

Now I'm thinking I need to change the oil when I get back home. I'm sure many of you use M1 oil but it's the only thing in this equation I've changed. I believe the dealer uses castrol?

For the record I used 5w-20, and the motorcraft FL-910S

How is this car kicking my ass? [:(!]

makes no sense. it cant be normal, and it didnt do it before. although i wasnt around the car before, as we kept it out in California before bringing it to jersey, sometimes it would sit in Cali for like 3 weeks in the employee lot.

the only change made when getting it home was RR drain bolt, RR filter and oil. i dont really believe in coincidences as if something else popped up at the same time. once the engine runs for 5 seconds everything is fine.

ford dealer changed the oil yesterday. its still happening. so in one respect im glad this seems to no longer related to my original oil change. my tap tap tap lifter description was a really poor one.

here is a crappy video but good audio of the noise. it is only happening on cold starts in the morning after the car has been sitting. all other starts are normal.

my guess, without getting the hood open and listening for it while watching, is it almost sounds like a bearing on one of the belt pulleys.

started the car up this morning and it was perfectly fine. i dont get this.
is it possible that noise is a result of running techron fuel treatment through the system? i added techron and a tank of 92 octane to it because it had been sitting for over a month. yesterday the tank was empty so i put regular gas back in it, and this morning the noise didnt happen.

(ive run techron once a year through all my other cars and never had a problem)

that noise to me doesnt sound like something inside the motor though, it sounds like an accessory has a bad bearing.

Could have been the mix of old gas and/or water from it sitting and possible bad 92. Some stations don't move the premium as fast as others. I run 93 in mine with no problem.

Sounds like a pebble may have gotten wedged in the tray that protects the crank pulley.

Pull the underbody tray, and inspect all around that crank cover plate to make sure you don't have an unintended passenger.

Ask me how I know this... ;)
