I have a 2004 Ford Focus SVT and I just bought a whole new electric window assembly from ford. connected it and in both drivers and passenger switches it only responds and works when it goes up but doesn't do anything at all when I want the window down. from both sides..

any ideas what this is?...it's really annoying...it's not responding at all..I'm trying to trouble shoot if there are any loose cables and nothing..

I would apreciate any help !!!

thanks in advance!!

Very possible both, there are only two wires to motor itself, the power is simply reversed on the leads to change direction. Start by hooking motor up to battery, reverse wires to change direction, if no, motor is bad, if yes then wiring or switching further up the circuit. Just switched a manual Focus to electric windows, lotta wires in there..........

How about the switch? I have taken switches apart before and cleaned them with much success. The switch is how the power is reversed. Whether you're looking for a broken connection or a dirty switch, it seems like you're going to have to take the door apart again.

The phrase 'brand new motor' means nothing unless checked as known good.

With skills you are putting out so far in posting, you will not be able to check cables. You gotta be able to check for power or ground at any one of 8 relay locations and at certain switched positions.

Could be switch too as he says.

Haven't dealt with this fun on a Focus yet, but on other veh. experience showed that with the double switched system to move ONE window a fault on the driver's side OR at the window can cause BOTH switches to exhibit the same behavior.

On one, bad sw. pass. side, neither would raise window. On another, bad wiring in driver's side harness (where it flexes to the door) resulted in NEITHER switch raising the window.

Testing it all can be a PITA, all you can do is start with likely failure areas first (switches & driver's side wiring being typical areas that give trouble).

Step by step & you'll get it done...

luck!

isn't this it ? http://www.rockauto.com/getimage/ge...hp?imagekey=3772500&imageurl=http://www.rockauto.com/info/SMP/RY784_PRIMARY.jpg

So far, I've changed driver and passenger window switches, cleaned out all the contacts I could get my hands on. replaced the whole window motor with a new one. clean contacts from car to door (connectors). and nothing...tried banging each door and kept trying the switch and nothing either..

I'm thinking its a ground inside the door now or something ?...or this relay ?...but I don't know where it is

isn't this it ?
Nope. As whynot, amc49 mentioned earlier the switch is what controls motor direction. Ford would probably put any relay in either the fuse panel or battery junction box.
btw, motor grounds are in the front left and right kick panels.
As was also already mentioned earlier by Infrared, you may have a wiring break; the door to body boot is a good place to start.
You need to check wiring continuity. Do you have a wiring diagram and multimeter? Can't really do a proper wiring test without them.

Sorry to bring up a dead post but just wanted to correct something in case someone was having this same problem. There IS in fact a window relay installed on the Focus (2000-2004 anyway) It is located inside the door on the top right area. Below is a video of someone doing an install.

My problem: Window always went UP but only went down when it felt like it. Circuit at the motor was showing 12V when I pressed UP and 0V when I pressed down. Replacing the relay fixed the problem. (tip: go to the junk yard for this part. Should be $5 or so)

Old thread?? BEFORE ANYONE HAS THIS ISSUE and buys any parts.
There is a 'switch reset procedure' and I know it's in the owners manual, the same goes for the moon roof (if you have one). I don't recall it right off hand but I think it's on the forum also ... pour a coffee, it'll take you a while to find it here. Try it, it just might work.

Why on earth would you have to do that, the system is simple enough at least on the early ones it either works or doesn't. The switches themselves have no 'reset' ability at all, they either work cleanly or they don't and faulty.

There IS indeed a single relay on the driver side front only, the 'one touch' relay. The instant up/dn mentioned. That could have created the earlier posted fault.

Only possible thing that can be reset there is the timer module itself, that will have no impact whatsoever on the actual switching system (the manual component) lower down in the circuit.

That's just for the later ones and they show they need reset by going all the way up and then slightly down. Those more evolved functions showed up around '05ish or so with new body control softwares. Simple enough to separate that issue out...............without buying a thing.
