Hey guys, so for the last 5 days ive been installing sound deadener in my 04 zx3, I had the entire interior taken out (minus the dash). I went to start it up today and it wont start. There is plenty of power, but the starter isn't getting power. I dont hear any noise coming from the engine bay at all. All interior lights and exterior lights are working. I didn't fiddle with any elecrical bits while I was doing my project, so Im not sure what happened. Can you guys help me troubleshoot it? I have no idea where to start.

If your not even hearing the starter turn then the starter might be the problem or a wire running to it, it's weird that it would happen when the cars just sitting but it does sometimes, why IDK.

If you where hearing the starter turning but not the engine, then I would say a solenoid in the starter is bad, in which case without the solenoid working properly it would not shoot the gear out to make contact with the gear in the bell housing to turn the motor.

Ok so I was just thinking, I had to drill a hole through the firewall to run a subwoofer wire, I drilled it just up and to the left of the clutch peddle. i didnt' see any wires or anything, but could there be something around there that I missed that would be causing this problem?

Possibly if it was far up to the left of the clutch puddle, then that's where the fuse box wire run through the fire wall. A whole lot of them.

Here is a pic of behind the fuse box, you can see all the wires that run through the fire wall there on the right.

This is on my 2000 wagon, and I believe it is the same way on my girls 03 zx3.

Check to see if you accidentally knocked the clutch position switch out of the way. What you're describing is like what happens when the clutch position switch is damaged or has been knocked out of alignment.

In order to test the CPS in the case of the "evil coincidence" unplug it's connector, and use a piece of solid wire to bridge the 2 points on the connector.

I certainly hope you didn't drill a hole through anything. I took mine through the bulkhead connector with all the other wiring, and used a grommet and Mortite to seal it.

is the grounds ok? the ground to the bell housing and the fender must be in tip-top shape!

also, when you turn the key on, is the PATS light blinking fast?
this is a sign that the key has been dis-programmed.

just tossin ideas out there!

Nope, no lights flashing. Everything inside the car is working perfectly, all lights, radio etc.. It seems to be just limited to the starter. Can you guys give me the rundown on what I should do to test the starter? Ive never done it before...

there is a plastic cover protecting the starter sylenoid from the 12v source. flip open this cover to reveal these posts. place a screwdriver over both posts to test it. if it turn the crank, its obviously something else.

Good idea. Be Careful!!! Up on Jack Stands, rear wheels blocked, trans in neutral. This will work with the key on or off. If it`s off, the engine will crank but not start, with it on, it will start and run, even if it`s in gear!!! All you have to do is touch the posts for a second, that will get the starter turning, then you know it`s another problem. If it wont crank and sparks fly, you know the starter is shot. If that is the case. I have actually hit the starter with someone else holding the key in the crank position, sometimes the starters get stuck , with the bendix on the Fly wheel / ring gear...

Ok, so I got an update. I remembered that earlier I had unhooked a plug coming off of (what I now realize is) the fuse box. So i plugged it back in, and the starter cranks, but the engine still wont turn over. What might have happened with the fuse box being disconnected for a day?

So let me just get this right now, the engine is not turning what so ever but you could hear the starter turning?

And did it sound like the starter was free spinning?

#19 ·
No, it sounds normal, its just not catching. Its not even sputtering like its trying to start. It just sounds like the starter is turning it over. Ill grab a sound clip with my phone, back in a sec.

I just noticed I cant hear the fuel pump priming before I start the car. what would disconnecting the fuse box have done to the fuel pump? Does anyone have a fuse diagram so I can figure out which fuse is for the fuel pump.

Pull the plugs and see how wet they are. If they are wet then dry them off, reinstall em. Before you crank the car put the pedal all the way to the floor, this will keep more fuel from being sprayed into the engine. if that doesnt work. did you check for spark ?

Ok so i pulled the plugs, and they were all dry, so I guess that means they aren't getting any fuel? And whats the proper way to test plugs? I pulled one, and put it back on the wire and cranked the engine, I didn't see any spark. Should I hold it up to something metal while cranking? Heres a shot of the plugs, if it helps.

edit: I also checked the fuse for the fuel pump, and it was fine

I don't have your owner's manual, so I can't check. Someone said that there was a relay in the fuse box in the cabin for the fuel pump. There is also the fuel cut-off switch. You can remove the kick panel, and unplug it if the button is already pushed down. If it is up, then push it down. If it is down, then unplug it and bypass the fuel cutoff switch the same way as you bypassed the clutch position switch.

I find it strange that the car was running before you did a stereo install, and you haven't found any evidence of damage near what you've done the car. Typically if it works, then you work on it, and it doesn't work afterwards- you did something you shouldn't have.

No offence taken, I wouldn't be supprised if I unpluged something by mistake. Ill try what you suggested, I already checked that switch, but Ill unplug it and try again. Im not sure why the fuel pump wouldn't be receiving power, its pretty strange. Ill double check the spark tomorrow. Where exactly is the fuel pump located? Id like to pull a line and see if any fuel is being pumped.

Edit: btw, Ive already checked the fuel pump fuse and its fine. Any idea what to check next (after i double check the fuel pump cutoff switch)?
edit: I noticed that the check engine light is on, how can I run the trouble codes?

Run DTC codes with a scan tool. You can try the electronic odometer trick, but not everything shows up. Maybe what you need to know will show up. Who knows? Just to check up on things:

1) Cranks but not starts
2) no fuel pump sound/dry plugs

There's no sense in worrying about spark until your plugs are wet. The best way to test for that is with a timing light or a spark tester- not holding the plug on the block. You likely have spark, but without fuel it does nothing. The problem is likely electrical. There is a fuel pump control module under the back seat, passenger side. The power for the fuel pump runs to there. It could be an "evil coincidence" that either the fuel pump or the module went out while you were putting in a stereo. You could check for power at the fuel cutoff switch, if you have 12v to ground (provided you can find a decent ground there) on one of the connector then you have either a bad pump or a bad module.

You have verified that the chassis grounding points are wired correct? There must be a ground wire from the neg battery terminal to the car body otherwise very few things work.

That fuel pump control module you mentioned, I had to remove that one when I was installing the sound deadener, so there is a very good possibilty that I forgot to reinstall the plug after!

edit: I just checked it, and I did infact forget to plug it back! Unfortunatly 2 of the plugs cracked while I was removing them, so I cant even try cranking it over until I pick some up... grr Man, im just praying that was the problem lol...
