AC Compressor freezing up

So I turned on my AC yesterday and it seized up right away and shut my engine off. Luckily I was parked. Anyway, it turns just fine when the AC is off. So I was wondering if anybody could tell me if this means that the compressor itself is shot or just the clutch. And if it is the compressor, what else do I need to replace with it? (Accumulator, hoses, etc?)

Yeah, your compressor is locked up. You turn on the AC with the button in the cabin, and that provides power to the AC clutch. Since the compressor doesn't turn, you get the screaming belt sound.

A good thing to do would be replace the orifice tube, and all the O-rings. A new compressor, then add oil and refrigerant.

The clutch just makes it possible for the pulley to turn the compressor. The clutch is electric. When the clutch goes bad, it simply doesn't turn the compressor.

I would search online for an inexpensive compressor replacement. You can also search the local yellow pages for local parts rebuilders. You might be able to get the compressor rebuilt cheaper locally than by ordering a new compressor online.

You should also check out the "General AC Troubleshooting and Repair" article at the top of this forum. That will help you some when you get ready to repair the AC system. With proper attention to detail, and the right tools- either rented or purchased, you can do a much better job than most shops would do on your own AC.
