2013 Ford Focus Battery Change.. Reprogram??

Hi all. So, I was recently at my local Ford dealership getting some warranty work done. They tell me I need a new car battery. And they also tell me if I do it myself, I'll still need to bring to them to have a "reprogram performed", which will cost $60.

Can anyone confirm this, or are they just trying to get money out of me? I really don't have the extra cash right now to be just throwing around, so any information will be helpful.

Here we go.

Battery Management System - reset? - Ford F150 Forum - Community of Ford Truck Fans

BMS = battery monitor system..................they reset it for the new powerful battery.

Take note of the 8 hrs. you let the vehicle sit to get it to relearn the new battery condition if not doing that.....................8 hrs. = $60 sounds like to me.

'Off load shedding' is where the system still has the old battery readings in it and thinking battery is dead or dying it stops unimportant things like radio or a/c from working thinking it is saving power when it is scarce. Possibly saving you from a sudden shutdown on the freeway.

Healthy price for something that would likely be free including installation if you bought the battery there.

Some long discussions on this in the MkIII section, took a while before anyone came up with official info. on this new system and it's still a bit limited.

When not done in SOME manner (like sitting long enough untouched) you'd have a slight loss in MPG and some odd actions like cutting off radio early when played with the car off. Low battery warnings possible at odd times like that.

Just let the vehicle sit for 8 hours. You could always spend that $60 on weed and be so high during that time that you wouldn't care that you weren't going anywhere. Call in to work explaining that you just got a copy of the new Battlefield game and were up all night, and you were out of Doritos and brownies. These things constitute emergencies in some people's minds. Besides, if your Ford mechanics are going to get high for 8 hours watching your car sit, why not you?

IMO Ford batteries are good anyway. My Focus battery lasted for 8 years. It might have lasted longer, but the alternator went out, and I had to purchase a new battery in order to drive home from work on battery power only. The battery that I purchased gave me issues for 2 years until I replaced it.

Batteries for cars are only made in a few places. Chances are good that you can get a good battery elsewhere- Exide, for example, makes a good battery, and so does Interstate. I highly suggest that anyone getting a new battery purchase an AGM battery instead of a traditional battery. These are more expensive, but will perform better with stop/start systems.

Thanks everyone.

I've read a bunch of stuff about this. I've read let it sit for 8 hours and I've also read that this doesn't work.

Every time I read one thing I read something else that contradicts that.

So I'd love to concrete information I can use to push forward in the future so I dont need to deal with Ford's crappy service department.

Thinking it out is much better than any 'concrete' info that you could always still question.

As in.............why does a system that can auto adjust for battery condition as it slowly wears out NOT be able to do the same when the battery is renewed, and even more so when the cars have been able to do it for the last 75 years without any of that reset crap?

Battery charged high-alt charges less, battery low-alt charges more, the science has not changed. The PCM simply takes more control of that.

Stay fearful = open your wallet, they LOVE THAT. Why they put those fears in your head.
