Here's a good picture of the whole assembly from an Amazon page selling a replacement:

I just ordered one. My car is out of warranty, and replacement doesn't look too complicated once you remove the hose that connect the air filter box to the intake manifold. Not worth it to me to pay the dealer $300 to install a $40 part.

Hey the evap system is not covered by either the powertrain or the emission warranty???

WTF!

Thank the government & auto industry lobbyists at work, what was once a warranty on the whole emissions system is down to a warranty on specific 'major components' of that system in the USA (some differences in California).

ok so i got a new purge valve. it worked, even though they gave me the wrong part. it was about a foot too long so i cut it down and used normal vacuum hose. all better for me. so yes the valve can get stuck closed and open. mine happened to be stuck open.

Good thing you replaced it before it caused other damage!

I ended up getting reimbursed for most of mine. Agree....should be covered under emissions warranty.

The part cost me 90 at the dealership and took me 40 min to install... My tank went back to normal and running like a top now... Save a total of 490 bucks doing it myself rather then dealership... Thanks everyone
I believe you save close to 2000$ ... a failed collapsed tank (if you didn't catch the problem) , the next step in a bad evap problems require the whole replacement of evap purge, gas tank & fuel pump!!!

plus the vapor storage canister and solenoid valve that sits over the top of the tank bolted to the body and can fill with raw gas making it worthless theres another close to 200 with shipping

We had our 2014 Job1 Focus (wife's car) in for this repair (new valve, tank and EVAP canister) in mid-April and I think that I was told that the latest fuel tank revision has some design features to lessen the probability that the tank will collapse if the EVAP canister fills with fuel again.

The driveability of the car did improve after the repair.[cheers]

From my reading there seem to be a purge valve on the emissions canister near the fuel tank and a purge valve on some snaky tube like thing in the engine compartment. Which is more likely to be the culprit? Does any one know how can I test them?

Mine was the one in the engine bay. Dealer had several in stock. 5 minutes to swap out and fuel gauge immediately read correct

I picked one up today at the local dealer (only one they had) and will put it in later. My car has 162,000+ miles and this is the first mechanical issue I have had. Fingers crossed that this fixes this problem and I don't have any more for a while (hope I didn't just jinx myself!).
