Why my Focus didn't have a console Tray

So I finally figured out what happened to the tray in my center console. Ford never put one in!

Here's the message direct from FORD Corporate:

Nov 11 2015 2234 – 2016 Focus Vehicles Built After 11/03/2015 Will No Longer Have A Tray In The Console. It Was Deleted, And Should Not Be considered A Miss-built Unit

2016 Focus vehicles built on or after November 3 will no longer have a rubber console tray in the console compartment under the console lid.

Feedback from recent customer clinics indicated that customers felt the tray obstructed access to the compartment and suggested that it should be eliminated.

Please do not submit for a Miss-built Unit, and/or add the tray back in the console.

Service Management Team please share with the Sales team the deletion of the tray in the console

I sigh every time a manufacturer takes away something a lot of people want. [spank] What they should have done is make more storage options in the vehicle. I used to drive a CR-V and I say it had about 3x the usable storage, especially for the driver. [idea]

I'm not even sure what you're talking about, to be honest. But your post self-contradicts. Ford did listen to their customers who said it gets in the way and should be removed. Working in product design every option always has trade-offs and there will be parties on either side asking for this feature or that. Ultimately the game is to concede to whichever party is larger and offers the lower cost.

Here it sounds like that was the party that didn't want the trays, which means one less part for Ford to put in a stock car, and one more aftermarket sale they can make at 200% margins for the subset of people that do want it. Hard to argue with that!

Do you want to buy a new car and immediately throw away a piece that came with it?

I see the argument you're making, but if they can make more money with fewer pieces and keep most of their customer base happy, why wouldn't they?

And capitalism says that eventually another company will see the demand for those trays (if there is enough) and start making them.

Sure, if it's not something I'm interested in. Or since it's rubber, won't make any rattles, just throw it in the glovebox and forget about it. Hell, CRAIGSLIST it for $20 like was just said.

No reason to take away a $.05 piece of rubber from the people who do want it! I love mine, it divides my spare change from the Burned MP3s CD case that fits perfectly below it.(or soft cased 9mm) [gunfire]

I doubt the cost of the tray is free to the customer. I'm betting Ford accounts for every penny. If they remove the tray will they cut the cost on the sticker price for the customer?
I'm also curious as to when and where this survey happened and how many actually said they don't want it.
Maybe they should address the lack of quality in the windshields for the Focus rather than a tray.
