Question, with the seats up which has more room? I chose a sedan since I thought you could put more cargo in the trunk and hold 4 poeple at the same time.
Sedan = 13.2 Cu. Ft.
Hatch = 23.8 Cu. Ft.
Hatch = 44.8 Cu. Ft. (seats down)

According to www.cars.com, the hatch has approximately 10 cubic feet more cargo space than the sedan (with the seats up).

These numbers don't really tell the whole story. Keep in mind that the hatch volume (with seats up), reflects the volume all the way to the roof. This is good for carrying taller items, that you would never be able to fit in a sedan trunk.

However, I believe that if you are looking a overall surface area of trunk space the sedan is bigger. I believe someone made a comment about being able to fit a set of golf clubs in the back of a sedan, but with the hatch, you had to remove your driver.

That being said, I am going to be purchasing a hatch. I like the look of both equally, but what bothered me about the sedan was that while the trunk area was larger, the trunk door was so small. I can't fit my hockey bag into the trunk because it won't fit through the opening. I also prefer the versatility that the hatch offers.

I've ordered mine in the hatchback, because I figured it would be more room which I definitely could use. This is also my first hatchback, but I figured it would be about the same as owning an suv/cuv, but smaller.

Yes, I do see your point. To be fair, just don't forget the gooseneck hinges that eat into the trunk space or crush your groceries if you don't pack accordingly. I think with the seats down someone here fit (3) 32-gallon trash cans in the hatch. Certainly can't do that in a sedan.

1. much more luggage/storage capacity
2. somewhat shorter overall (around 6 inches) than the sedan - I park in a small garage space so that was an important consideration
3. multiple reviews assert that the HB handles better than the sedan
4. the HB is more visually attractive IMHO

If point number 3 is valid, not many would ever notice the difference driving normally. I know I didn't and I drove both types.

Point number 4 is subjective to each individual, hence why there is two types available. I've always had a sedan in the past and it was never an issue.

Yes, good point. Those hinges are always hitting things in sedans I have owned in the past. IF I managed to fit my hockey bag into the trunk it probably wouldn't even close due to those hinges.

I did see the pics of those 3 trash cans in the back, and he still had room to squeeze in a few grocery bags. The hatch is just so much more versatile. It's not like you are giving up any leg room with the hatch either (in fact, I think you gain more headroom in the backseat).

The hatchback handles better than the sedan. That is just simple physics. It is because of the body design. The hatchback Mazda 3 handles better than the sedan 3. Compact hatchbacks have always been known for great handling because the unibody structure makes them stiff and well balanced. It's one of the reaons that so many rally car teams pick a hatchback model to race.

Yea, but I'm not racing are you? I could not tell any difference in handling after driving both of the them the way I normally dive a car. The handling on the sedan was noticeably better than any of the other cars I test drove so I bought the Focus. The sedan just looks better to me. I've never had a problem with the goose neck hinges in the trunk either.

The bottom line is Ford has given each of us a choice, thankfully, and you can decide which you prefer. Every time I look at both the hatch and the sedan the sedan just looks better to my eye. Thanks Ford for giving us the choice to choose and making the sedan a little cheaper to purchase.

^^^Well....the thread is titled "Why do you like a hatchback over sedan?" so lets not turn this into a which is better thread...those always die a horrible death. I'm also interested to hear why people who picked hatch, like it better.

If you like you could always start a 'Why do folks who bought a sedan, like it better?' thread.

ordered a hatchback..

more utility for me, i carry cargo far more than i carry passengers.

if i wanted a sedan i would have gone with the fusion hybrid. it was a tough decision between that and the focus hatchback. if they had a fusion hybrid hatchback that would have been my choice without any contest. maybe in a few years...

Never said it was better. I said I liked it better so there is no war going on here.

So far there are only three points that hatch owners have pointed out of why they like the hatch better:

1. They like the look better
2. They like the practicality of more space for cargo.
3. They like the handling better.

Can anyone add to this list anything new because I think that just about covers it.

I mean other than those 3 points, it really is the same car.

I bought the Sedan myself because I plan on getting a family car (SUV) to replace my Fusion when my family size grows, so I have no need for a hatch. I do like the Sedan look myself.

So ultimately it comes down to personal preference.

I only started this thread because I see alot of peeps here own HBs.
Anyways I renamed the thread more appropriately. Hmm or not, I tried renaming it, it does it on the 1st post but not showing up on the board listing...

I asked a guy at work that is into cars which one he liked better and he liked the hatch better. He has a VW GTI and loves that car but personally I don't like the look of that car at all. Love the way it drives, just not big on the looks.
