When to change timing belt?

First time here. Just bought an 01 wagon at auction, so no records. It's got 62k miles. I will have my mecanic check it out but any advice is welcome. I've searched the Fanatic archives to find out when timing belt should be changed. I've heard everything from 60k-100k, but 75 seems to be the consensus. Guess I'll pick up a Haynes guide but thought I'd ask here first. Also, is it good to change from reg oil to synthetic at this point?

i've seen some people say that you should go with semi synthetic before going full synthetic. Im running semi syn right now and im going to full synthetic on the next oil change. I don't know if it makes a difference or not, getting the engine used to a synthetic oil or not... Hope that helps a little bit. Also, im not sure about the exact mileage of the timing belt, i've heard that 50k is the usual around on any car...but i would also like to know if anyone could contribute to that....

I would go ahead and change out the belt for a new one, just so that you are starting fresh with your new car. As for the synthetic thing, i would use semi-syn for at least 3-4 oil changes (probably more) before going to full synthetic. The reason why it isnt a good idea to jump into synthetic is because of the seals and gaskets that have to absorb and fit to the new synthetic lubricant. If you dump synthetic in there before letting it adapt to the change, then you could be looking at some leaks. hope it helps and good lucj with your new focus!

At 108,000 + , I run synthetic only now.
I changed the belt on my Contour ( same motor ) at 94,000 miles, my Focus Timing belt will be changed VERY soon, hopefully this weekend. I think I waited to long as far as pushing myb luck thouigh and do not recomend going thisd long. treat it nice and it will last,.
