I'll go with M1 synthetic (used it in all my vehicles since '92) when Ford quits giving us our 5k oil changes for free which I thnk is for 3 years.

owners manual:

"Use of synthetic or synthetic blend motor oil is not mandatory. Engine oil need only meet the requirements of Ford specification WSS-M2C945-A, SAE 5W-20 and display the API Certification Mark."

*for the record, I consider Pennzoil Ultra to be one of the very few over the counter lubricants I would use in a pinch.*

For my first oil change I went full synthetic. (Pennzoil)
From what I have read on the net it's better then Dino oil
In every way. And since that I have done that I am now getting 7.4L/100km.
Went down .3L in fuel usage. I'm sitting with just under 9000km on the car
Ultra is not a full "true" synthetic. The API SM formulation was 100% group III hydrocracked "highly refined" petroleum. The API SN formulation is rumored to be group III+ GTL (Gas To Liquid) technology, bought exclusively by Shell from Quatar.

Ultra, from Pennzoil's statements, at one time contained no group IV PAO or group V Esters......and at one time did contain some group IV PAO. Pennzoil has changed the Ultra formulation more than once, so who knows what it contains these days.

+1. Lowest volatility mass-market oil available = good for intake valves in a direct injection engine like the Focus..
I'd still like to see a true lab report on this. Again, "rumors" state GTL has a slightly lower NOACK than a PAO/Ester formulation, but still simply talk. If it is true....we are only defining a .75% difference in volatility.

Even the resident experts on BITOG agree this information is too shady to trust.

GTL base stocks are classified as "Group III" almost by accident. In fact, they much more resemble a true synthetic than base stocks in other mass-market (Mobil, Valvoline, Castrol, etc.) oils marketed as full-synthetic.

I really don't get the "shady" comments. We're relying on Product Data Sheets published by the manufacturer for Ultra's specs, just like for every other oil. Do you really think Shell would publish bogus data and leave it on their website for over a year? I asked Shell to confirm Ultra's volatility specs and they did. GTL base stocks make a big difference.

Do you understand that you can only get a GTL basestock in 4 or 8 cst viscosity?

Do you understand that only the 8 cst version carries a 5% NOACK Volatility when used in 100% pure form?

Do you understand that you can't get a multi-viscosity 5W-20 lubricant from using 100% 8 cst base stocks?

Even the experts on BITOG agree what I am telling you.

Calm down guys... No need toget your panties wadded up over oil preferences

I agree, as my opinion is that Ultra is one of the best over the counter lubricants available. However, the experts are still questioning the elusive spec sheet.

So who makes a "true" full synthetic?

No, we need to have group IV & V base stocks so our engine will last for 500,000 miles instead of the 250,000 miles that it would last if we used Mobil 1.
fixed

Get ready for some more wadded up panties... I'm using Ultra 5w-30
I see what you did thar!

If my car were above the stock power level, seeing red line more frequently, it would also have a 30 grade lubricant in it. However, this grocery getter is lucky to see more than 4,000 rpm on any given day.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
