What kind of oil do you use in your Focus?

Looking ahead to my 1st oil change, and wondering what to use. The manual says:

Use of synthetic or synthetic blend motor oil is not mandatory. Engine oil need only meet the requirements of Ford specification WSS-M2C945-A, SAE 5W-20 and display the API Certification Mark.

And then it says:

Your engine has been designed to be used with Ford engine oil, which gives a fuel economy benefit while maintaining the durability of your engine. Using oils other than the one specified can result in longer engine cranking periods, reduced engine performance, reduced fuel economy and increased emission levels.

I don't believe any of that last paragraph, but I don't know much about oil so I would love some opinions.

The last paragraph is true, if you use an oil that doesn't meet the original specification could cause issues. A heavier weight oil is harder to pump than the specified 5W20 that was filled at the factory. Heavier oils could also increase friction reducing engine performance and decreasing fuel economy. If you stick to something that meets the ford specification that is 5W20 and is api certified you should be fine, but with dyno/fossilized plant oil you will need to run used oil analyses to determine the alternative change intervals vs the factory semi-synthetic oil or going with a full synthetic oil.

What I have been doing is taking my car into the nearest dealer every 5K miles and having them do the oil changes with the Motorcraft Syn-blend... I'll keep doing that until my 36K warranty is up. I may switch to full Syn on my next (20K) oil change.

*for the record, I consider Pennzoil Ultra to be one of the very few over the counter lubricants I would use in a pinch.*

Ultra is not a full "true" synthetic. The API SM formulation was 100% group III hydrocracked "highly refined" petroleum. The API SN formulation is rumored to be group III+ GTL (Gas To Liquid) technology, bought exclusively by Shell from Quatar.

Ultra, from Pennzoil's statements, at one time contained no group IV PAO or group V Esters......and at one time did contain some group IV PAO. Pennzoil has changed the Ultra formulation more than once, so who knows what it contains these days.

+1. Lowest volatility mass-market oil available = good for intake valves in a direct injection engine like the Focus..
I'd still like to see a true lab report on this. Again, "rumors" state GTL has a slightly lower NOACK than a PAO/Ester formulation, but still simply talk. If it is true....we are only defining a .75% difference in volatility.

Even the resident experts on BITOG agree this information is too shady to trust.

I agree, as my opinion is that Ultra is one of the best over the counter lubricants available. However, the experts are still questioning the elusive spec sheet.

During the winter I like to use the recommended 5w-20(Mobile 1 Full Synthetic) , but when it gets hot out I like running Mobile 1 Full Synthetic 5w-30 every once in a while. I Usually stick with the 5w-20 though just to stay on the safe side.
Just be aware that 5w/30 doesn't meet Ford's oil specification for the car (WSSxxx945) and Ford could contend you haven't done your part to maintain the warranty.
