My wife was driving my car and she said it came on, the car revved real high and shook. I just got home and it started up fine and was idling fine, but I have not drove it yet. It's a 2001 ZX3.

I've had this happen to me too. I was engine braking coming into the small town where I spent my first semester at college. While I was slowing down the little light came on and the the car pretty much nose dived. I put the clutch in, the light went off and it was fine. Never has happened again and haven't had any problems. I'd still get it checked out though.

I think he's talking about the yellow light that has a gear with an exclamation point in the middle of it.

Taken from this thread... What's the yellow bottle cap light with the exclamation point.
The " ! " is a MAJOR warning light that something is not operating in the safe zone , something the ECU has no control over , a lot of times this is when the ECU goes into fail safe mode

Water temp to high
Oil temp to high
Low Oil Psi
Charging system

This will NOT show up as a ECL code and once the issue goes away (engine cools down) this light will go off by it self

For that light to come on it had to be something major

Tom
I had this happen to me about 2 months ago. My battery was shot, which would put me into the 'Charging system' category.

It's Ford's "the computer knows something is wrong, but just doesn't know what" light. My 02 was giving a brief loss of power follwed by a sudden surge, and acting erratic - it would run fine immediately afterwards. Within two hours of the first presentation of the light, the battery exploded and the car suffered a mild electrical fire.

Run, don't walk to a dealer/mechanic to get it looked at - ASAP. The cost of fixing my 02 would have been $3k+ (the onboard electronics were fried as well), so we took a $2500 loss and got stuck trading it in on an 07. Truth be told - I really wanted a VW Jetta or a Rabbit and had NO desire to buy another Ford after owning that car. My wife was in a hurry to get me back on the road, so we bought focus #2, which is proving to be a far worse car than the 02 ever was.

Mine went on and off seemingly randomly about 2 days, while I was waiting on a dealer appointment the alternator died. So I guess mine meant "charging system" too.

Stupid dealer was like "we can fit you in 2 weeks?" and I was thinking... but, but it's an exclamation point! The manual is fairly vague, from my recollection 3 years ago.

^^nice...i call this light the "Oh S**T IM GOING TO EXPLODE" light...

when i first saw this light, i asked the passenger to look up what it meant in the user manual and three seconds later the main radiator hose split in half and i lost all power steering while driving down the highway...now with radiator fluid covering half the windshield...

i learned this light's meaning the hard way...tensioner pulley seized and popped the serpentine belt off track meaning no alternator, power steering, or water pump...pressure built up and blue the hose while driving down the highway

...that was terrifying, haha

Exclmation Point Multi Function Light

Been having trouble with my focus overheating with the a/c on and idling at traffic lights (100 degrees here every day for a month). Dont hear the fan kicking on except when a/c is on. Changed out 2 thermostats - nothing changed. So Sunday we had to go out of town. Car ran like a spotted ape. 90 miles an hour on freeway for over 100 miles no problems, ac on. Stayed there 3 hours. Did some driving around town. No problems. On way back - 2 miles onto freeway exclamation point - multifunction light would come on for about 5 seconds. red light near flasher control would go solid, car would buck but never lost speed.Became more frequent, rpms and speedometer would drop to zero and then resume for a split second - still never lost speed. Car would buck. Was not getting towed from 100 miles out kept going got home fine. Next day car ran fine the light came on briefly jerked once. Did my research. My car does not have a coolant temperature sensor but rather a cyclinder head temperature sensor. My car was in fail-safe mode shutting down cylin ders at random to keep engine from becoming damaged. The bucking was cylinders randomly shutting down. thermostat also has gasket leak so losing pressure. replacing thermostat again with new gasket and the cylinder head temperature sensor. will let you know if it solves the issue.

Glance through the rest of the thread to date, about the only response that doesn't apply directly is the brake fluid level one AFAIK.

Described earlier as the "Oh Shit" light, engine/trans overheating or other major malfunction means stop & get it fixed as soon as physically possible.

Continued driving could cause major damage beyond any already present, it's NOT a "fix it when you get a chance" light like a solid CEL (Check Engine Light).
