since my car is relatively new, i just wanted to get a few things straightened out, and i figured some people in here could help me out.

my car came with the normal dealership warranty, and of course i want to mod out my car, but i'm concerned with some of the upgrades voiding it. i've done some research, and came up with the concept that 'if it doesn't directly affect the engine, it doesn't void it.' but i've also read that if it 'improves gas efficiency' that it doesn't either.

so, if anyone doesn't mind helping me out, what upgrades will and will not void it?

By the way, this is my second post and this site is awesome, I truly respect you guys and all your knowledge, as I am new to modding. I just bought an 04 yellow zx3 and want to mod, but i've only got 4000 miles on it. I'm south of Portland and just noticed that Landmark Ford of Tigard is listed on ford racing products page as a place to buy products, so I will check them out. Again awesome site and I am thrilled to be a part of it.

What about shorty headers will these vois my warranty
depends on what your problem is. for example, if you have a shorty header and your power window isn't working, they should take care of you bc one has nothing to do with the other.

now, let's say you had one of the following problems:

catalytic converter begins failing
oil dipstick tube starts to melt
wires are becoming hard and frayed
etc.

these are the kind of things that would obviously be caused by the excessive heat of your aftermarket part. not ford's fault so they won't cover you.

getting the picture?

when you start messing with that you are getting into emissions issues, and I think that is messier to deal with than warranty

lol . . so I should bribe my dealership's repair dept with kegs? That sounds like my kind of shop! I think I'm in the wrong line of work!

^^^^ not guaranteed, so no. not to get too off topic, but like i've mentioned a million times before, ford simply won't stand behind their aftermarket parts like toyota (scion) or mopar. it's annoying at best.

now, that being said, just find a dealer in your area who's cool with stuff like that. usually, the dealer who sells Ford Racing will be a little more mod-friendly. find that dealer, get on a first name basis with the srvice writer, and buy the guy a beer if you can! you keep bringing the car back to them and they'll usually take care of you pretty well.

That ^^^ brings up a good point . . . I was thinking of buying the Ford Racing springs, as I figured that if it is a Ford part they won't give me crap about the mod . . . any thoughts on that?

hm. well i read the link on the other page, and i think S2 summed it up the best. but, i think i'm just going to ride it out for now, and see if i have any problems in the near future, maybe longer. thanks for all the input, it'll be taken into consideration.

I have had a bad experience with the dealer ships. I bought my car and has a sound system installed after about a month, about two weeks after that I sat down in my car and busted a coil spring. The service manager decided that my problem was caused by the amp and it weakened the spring......Man did I let him have it [}:)]

From my personal experience and reading this forum, it differs from dealer to dealer. I had a sensor replaced under warranty (the dpfe sensor (egr) I believe). But when a wire was pulled out of the MAF sensor because my air intake stretched the harness (took over a year to be pulled loose) the warranty only covered the tow to the dealership. I had to pay the nearly $300 out of pocket for the mechanic to bodge together an old harness with my existing harness to make the wires the necesary length (better than$700+ for a new harness). I guess I should be glad the tow was covered under warranty (saved$60 - $70). The mechanic told me they had done "several" of these fixes in the last year.
The bottom line is it depends on how much of an a**hole the service manager at your dealership is.

I’m new to ford warranty but if it's like Subaru’s warranty Look out... they have like the secret service and CSI investigators working to prove that piaa head light caused your Trans to go bad.... Ok so im going a bit far? But they will do what ever they can and they get away with it.
Sorry but I needed to express that if the company wants to fight it they will win in most cases like an oil catch can caused a trans to fail.

Some companys use one mod to judge the way you drive your car. some dont care.
id like to know how ford is.....

Anal in there warenty dept.
Or Down to earth and hold common sence?

yeah, that is the basic difference. There is the law, and then there is how it is applied. And how it is applied is very different than some of the pictures being painted by those on the boards. Mod at your own risk, and I personally waited until I was outside the warranty to begin. You never know what could go wrong with the vehicle. Why throw the warranty away?

what frush is saying is the law, but, from what i read on the boards, there are dealerships that dont care and if they are a-holes they will find a way to tie any car problem you have whatever mod you have, irregardless of wether or not the mod has anything to do with the problem.

read the boards, there are good understanding dealerships and there are a-hole dealerships.

and ask yourself, is it worth getting 5 more hp to possibly void my warranty, then decide.

Don't think for one minute it will be that easy. I am not going to re-write what I posted on the SVT board, so I will just post the link. In summary, mod at your own risk. Whether you like it or not, most dealerships will hassle you about any mods because corporate, who licenses the owners, is putting massive pressur eon them to stop fradulent warranty claims. You need to determine whether weeks or months of headache are worth not waiting until you warranty runs out. You will need to use it at some point, so determine whether or not modding is that important to you.

For a mod to void warranty work, the dealer must be able to show directly, how the mod caused the problem. Period. End of story.
