trunk randomly opening while driving

I have a 2013 Focus Titanium edition. Lately after driving on a highway for about 50 minutes to right at an hour, the trunk will pop open (while at highway speed). At first I thought I was some how pressing it while the FOB was in my pocket. So I started laying the FOB on the seat so as nothing was disturbing it. Then still between 50 minutes to exactly 1 hour of driving, the trunk would pop open (while still at highway speed).
I know this sounds possessed but I'm stumped why this is happening and how it always happens around the one hour of driving. I do a lot of highway driving so it is a major deal for it to pop open while traveling on the roadway.
Anyone else heard or have this happen?

I'm sorry, but that's one of the funniest problems I've read about.

It could be a bad connection or bare wire somewhere near the button.
Could also be a short/bare wire somewhere in the harness between the button and the hatch.
Maybe the car hits some resonance frequency at 50 mph that wiggles the wire just right. [dunno]

If it's still in warranty take it to the dealer.
If not, then best of luck to you.

Looking around some more inside the trunk. The yellow emergency trunk release (when your stuck in the trunk) just hangs and doesn't take much to pull to open. I keep a small box in the trunk that holds small items. Maybe it is shifting to the point it hits that handle/cord. I taped up the handle and will see if that does it.

Actually this just happened to the Town Car in front of me a few minutes ago.... must be a Ford thing hahaha

Yes, this was happening to me. It was the emergency trunk release, which was somehow being triggered while driving. (The inside of my focus trunk lid is unfinished; it does not have the black trim/cover. My theory is that, while driving, the emergency trunk release was somehow becoming lodged in one of the many holes in the inner trunk lid, and was being triggered.)

Anyway. I solved the problem by velcroing the emergency trunk release to the inside of the trunk lid. It no longer dangles. The emergency trunk release is still fully functional, but it doesn't dangle down where it can be accidentally triggered.

I haven't had the problem since. I consider this a safety issue, so I hope this helps you.

Thanks, that is what I narrowed it down to. I noticed that the pull handle had fallen out the notch that is designed to hold it. I secured it back and no more pops. Till one day it happened, I opened the trunk and the handle was dangling again. Secured it better now that I know this is the cause.

This thread came up after a search, I know it's a few years old. This just happened to me for the first time in my 2014. It was raining hard and the ding ding ding warning came on. I looked and saw the trunk was open. I did have my spare key in my pocket, I thought it might be that getting bumped. I was not turning, but I will check the release inside.

Mine does this too, although it started after a rear end collision when some guy hit me. The locking mechanism was replaced on mine, but Ford refused to look at the electricals because I had a third brake like flasher installed and they said it was third party work, so they won't bother to take a look.

I will tape up the emergency trunk release cord too, but I don't see how it being untaped all this time prior to the accident led to 0 trunk openings, and all of a sudden does lead to openings post-accident is the release's fault.

I hope it's something as simple as that, though.

The tech recommended I switch fobs, which I did, but that did not fix the problem.

Mine usually pops open on highway driving.

2013 focus se have this problem. Makes no sense because the safety is supposed to prevent the trunk from opening while in drive or reverse. I believe a short. But can't locate it
