Tire Noise?

Last summer I bought a set of aftermarket wheels for my 09 SES because my stock wheels the clear was peeling off. I also bought a set of 215 45 17 Vogue Signature V tires. I got a really good deal on them from discount tire so I figured why not they had good ratings so I figured I would give them a shot. The tires were awesome initially. Grip was great, ride was great, no noise. I have put around 6K miles on them and all of a sudden they are now extremely noisy. For all season tires the grip really is great and I am very pleased with them and they ride fine, just all of a sudden they are so noise and I cant take it. I am just getting peoples opinion before I contact Vogue about it. In December of 14 I replaced the drivers side wheel bearing and last summer I replaced the passenger side because they were making a lot of noise but the noise from that was really triggered by 2 things speed and the direction I turned the wheel. I replaced both bearings with national bearings and all was good. The noise I am getting now is only related to speed the noise doesn't change when I turn the wheel. I guess I just want to make sure that I am right in thinking that this is a tire issue and not wheel bearings again. The tires are perfectly fine driving 40 and under with very minimal noise but as you go over 40 they start to hum and they get louder the faster you go. There really isn't any vibration in the wheel or anything and the noise doesn't change if I turn the wheel either direction, am I right in thinking this is tire noise? Should I contact Vogue? Could it be wheel bearings again? Thanks in advance for the help.

To add to this I just got done driving the car and if you shut the radio off they definitely him under 40 but it's not to bad it's starts to get louder and louder the faster you go I am almost certain it's tire noise but want get some opinions before I go to the company and ask about it since the tires do have a warranty

I'd bet its thread noise from those tires. Some tires start out nosiey from the get go & some get a hummy bearing type noise as they wear. My tires are making a light hummy bearing like noise at speed (50+), but they are worn down & I'll replace them soon. Just curios= Did you look at other tires? What sold you on those?

Haven't had them off and then somehow mixed them up putting back on did you? The manufacturers will say all day you can but I'm here to tell you it CAN ABSOLUTELY make noise doing that. Radials take a set rolling in one direction and then flipping that makes the noise, the tire belts don't like changing direction from what they took a 'set' from. Are they direction marked tires? That could say something.

Are they aired up correctly?

When the noise started I was almost at the 5k Mark and about to change my oil so I said I will rotate the tires when I change the oil. I rotated fronts to back and backs to front noise never changed it stayed the same. They are not marked directional anywhere on the tire the tires are aired up correctly and the tread is wearing nice and even I was told possibly the car may be out of alignment just enough to cause the tires to start getting noisy I may get the car aligned and see if that helps at all. I may also contact the manufacturer and see what they tell me but the noise is driving me nuts especially driving on the highway to and from work it's only a 20 min drive but pretty annoying at 70mph.

That is where I am at right now they are just so loud on the highway I can't take it did you ever get any resolution? Or did you just buy something else? I am going to contact vogue and see if I get anywhere with it I was steered towards this tire by a sales person at discount tire because of the warranty on the tire vs The hankooks I was looking at that didn't have one so I went with the vogues and like I said I really like the tire I usually run a winter and summer setup but this year I liked the vogues so much I ran them in the winter to and sold my winter set and they were great no problems at all now they are so loud that it's very annoying to ride in my car which was never the case before.

Haha. To be fair it wasn't just the tires that made me sell it. I got a deal on a used Lincoln Navigator and at the time didn't want two vehicles. The tire noise AND being overall bored with & not really needing it is why I let it go.

Well I normally buy my tires online and have my brother install them he works at a garage. I wasn't going to buy them at first they were slightly more money. I was going to buy a set of hankooks can't remember the exact model they were. When I called discount tire to ask some questions they steered me towards the vogues because they had good reviews they have a 60k warranty and the hankooks they said were kind of hit or miss you may get a good set or you may get a set that wears our very fast. I have always had good luck buying from discount so I took what they said and spent a little extra and bought the vogues and I'm not necisarily upset with them because everything else about the tire I really like they have just become very noisy I don't know if that will go away as they wear but they are really noisy right now.

Its definitely the tires, my brother had them(different size) and they were quiet at first and then horribly loud. I told him not to waste his money on them and to stick with well known brands. Go trade them if you can.

Edit: I can't believe that Discount tire pushed those tires over the Hankooks.

To add to your last statement^^^I'm surprised their didn't mention their store brand tire by Yokohama= YK520's.

#12 ·
Well that isn't what I wanted to hear haha but I just contacted vogue I will see where I get with them. Yes they pushed the warranty they said the hankooks don't have any sort of mileage warranty for a little more you can get the vogues that have a 60k warranty on them so I took the advice and said if they are going to reccomend then I'll go with them plus the reviews online weren't bad on them so I took the chance and they are super noisy now so if I don't get anywhere with vogue I will call discount and see what they tell me.

Well if I didn't have a truck payment right now I would definitely be looking at something new not because of the tire noise or that I don't like the car just itching to get something like an ST focus or maybe wait for the fusion sport but that isn't going to happen anytime soon I can't bring myself to have 2 car payments

#15 ·
I hear ya. I have three vehicles again so that whole one car thing didn't last. I ended up missing the gas mileage. Fortunately the only payment I have vehicle wise is the Focus, which I got preowned. So it's not a bad hook to be on.

'all of a sudden they are now extremely noisy.'

From OP.

Tires do NOT suddenly all go bad at once to make noise. Something has happened or done there if that statement is true. Tires will change over time to get louder, passage of time is key there.

I asked about directional tires but they don't have to be, I've seen them make noise simply changing the direction they turn, yet all tire people say you can do that. I strongly disagree, but then I do that with almost everything.

AMC49: I am not saying what you saying is wrong I am just wondering what could have changed that would cause them to get noisy all of a sudden. I had them on the car and they were fine. They started getting noisy I did not change anything they were the exactly how they were When they were first put on the vehicle. The only time I changed them was after they got noisy I rotated them when I changed the oil. I feel like they get noisier every day I feel like they magnify the road noise. One thing I found is they actually get quieter 75-80 still not quiet but quieter. I have not received any response from vogue I may have them rebalance and get an alignment and see what happens I can't take how loud they are it is driving me nuts.

#19 ·
75 and up they definitely quiet down alot and if that was as noisy as they were it wouldn't bother me a bit although I did notice that the backs still humm at that speeds the fronts quiet way way down it's just really weird it has to be just the tires or a combination of the tires and an alignment or balance issue

#22 ·
Little ways for having tire noise. IDK anything about those tires except ppl wanting to run whitewalls w/ gold. I reckon your the only one running those tires on this board.

#23 ·
Haha yes they are known for white walls they had good reviews and discount tire steered me towards them I really liked them at first and I still like them other than the noise I have no other complaints I guess that is a big complaint right now though

#24 ·
Kinda to late to take them back, I could see 25-50 miles, but for sure not 7k. Is the noise similar to aggressive off road tires on jeeps/pickups?

#25 ·
Ya they were quiet up until now but yes it's very similar to agressive off road truck/jeep tires running on pavement I think that is a good example. I feel like the road noise is amplified right now there really isn't any vibration like a wheel out of balance it is more the humming road noise and as you get to higher speeds you can feel like a buzzing in the gas pedal like road vibrations . I started this post to get a the general consensus if everyone thought it sounded like it is the tires or if there is another issue that I may be missing that could be causing my issue.

Is it possible one of the wheel bearings that I put in the front is bad already? The more and more I drive the car I feel like it may be the passenger side front bearing making noise and it's just so loud it's making me think it's the tires. When the bearings went bad last time they were quiet going straight but if you would turn then you would get a loud humming or howling sound. Is it possible for the bearing to go bad and make noise all the time and for that noise not to change by turning the wheel? I am just trying to narrow this down because it's driving me crazy. The reason I started suspecting maybe the bearing is because the noise is getting louder but I feel like it's coming from the passenger side and plus I feel like I'm getting some vibration in the gas pedal and I am getting some plastic vibrating noise on the passenger side from some trim on the interior I'm thinking if it was just tire noise I wouldn't be getting the vibrations but I guess I could be wrong.

#29 ·
Yea it very well could be a bad bearing or how you installed them, pretty much straight forward doing it, so I wouldn't think it was the installation. How about one of the rear bearings? Easier to install then the fronts.

#30 ·
It could very well be a rear bearing how do I check them? As far as the fronts go I pulled the knuckle off the car bought a national bearing from the auto parts store and took the bearing and knuckle to my brother he works at a ford garage and he replaced the bearing and I put everything together I try not to bother my brother to much with my car stuff especially the things I can do myself I only go to him when I can't figure it out or I don't have the equipment to do the work. I may have him listen to the noise and see if he thinks it's bearings or tires.

#31 ·
Since he has access to a rack, have ask him to rack the car & run it to 30, 40mph & see if you two can here any bearing noise when its rolling. That'd give you a idea about the front bearings.

#32 ·
Just wanted to update everyone that I had the car aligned today and the tires rebalanced. I also had the car checked over and most of my noise is coming from a bad carrier bearing on the passenger side CV axle so I will be replacing that sometime this week and update if my noise goes away but that explains how the reason for how loud the noise is.

#34 ·
Yes I bought a halfshaft from the auto parts but it was the wrong side it was the side with the 2 CV joint so I returned it and bought the part of the shaft with the bearing attached that goes into the transmission. The axle will be here tomorrow and I am going to start working on it Saturday so I will update on the process.
