Throttle Position Sensor Replacement

I have a 2001 Focus ZTS DOHC and I'd like to change the throttle position sensor.

I know the sensor itself can be removed and replaced BUT Ford only sells the sensor with the entire TB assembly...a complete rip if you ask me.

I'd like to get another one either seperately online or from a local junkyard.

The number I pulled off the current part is:

XS2A-98989-AB-0H08C

Can anyone give me a hand in locating this part or a replacement?

Cheers.

Hey Blur,

yes I took it out and tested it tonight. IN general it looks ok...I turned the pot and the change in resistance was pretty much linear....no wierd stuff.

BUT I did notice that at the end of the pot's rotation (on the high resistance side), there was a dip in ohms...so say close to the end it was 3.5 Kohms, it should go up higher but it dips to about 3.3K.

When I removed the TPS, I cleaned it with electronic cleaner (QD)...drenched it and let it sit for a while. I re-installed it and took the car out for a spin. Initially, things seemed okay. After returning home, I parked the car and noticed that the idle was pretty bad...popping and rough moreso than usual.

I unplugged the connector leading to the TPS and the revs increased to about 1100...then dropped to what they were previously....but the roughness in idle remained the same. Plugging the connector back in doesn't do much other than preventing the car from stalling after I give the accelerator a push and the revs drop after release.

So in short, I can't say I've solved much. It's become a bigger mystery (to me at least). What do you think?

yep, ford went to a newer style tb and tps. you can order the newer tps but it wont fit the older tb. i ended up buying the whole thing, think it was around 125. but ended up with a way smoother idle than the previous tb offered.
i looked for the tps all over, but it was discontinued for the old style.
on my old tps the pot became loose and could be moved side to side a little which threw the readings off, depending on where it was sitting.
best bet it to get the one from ford in the updated version.

Looks like I may have to! It's $139 from my local dealership.

Darn! I didn't want to spend too much on this car as I really don't know how long I'll keep it (1-2 years tops I guess). It already needs tires up front and what not.

Question about the updated TB...is it a different TB? Is that why you saw an improvement or was it simply because the TPS was bad?

Looks like the dealer is giving me the run around about the TPS on my car not being serviceable seperately. Pisses me off...I took the part off myself and it's as replaceable as any other part.

I could get a new TB assembly for $84...supposedly the newer updated kind with a new pigtail wire connector and the lot....only issue is I have splice the existing wires and what not. Not something I'm comfortable doing without some decent tools.

Maybe a junk yard?

I jsut replaced my TPS for my 02 ZTS with the Ztec. be careful, they have 2 different ones listed. one for $15 nad one for $30. Mine was the $30 one, of course! but it didnt fix my rough idle. I am thinking its the idle control valve. I know thats a common problems with the 80s nad 90s mustangs. I already cleaned the TB, MAF, airfilter and readjusted the TPS. what should the voltage be at idle?

Before you do anything else, check your EGR regulator valve...it's the canister looking plastic piece hanging from the firewall with two hoses attached to it...one hose leads back to the EGR valve and the other behind the TB.

It seems my rough idle was mostly due to a restricted/or leaking EGR reg valve. If you press on the top of the canister, the car should stall...
Pop off the top of the thing and you'll find a sponge...clean it and straighten i (if it needs it) and see what happens...worked for me...but I'm not out of the woods yet. Mine may be defective and I still have an ever so slight rough idle...but MUCH MUCH better than before...

Let me know what happens.

I replaced the throttle position sensor (tps) in my ford focus zts but it's still giving me the code for it and the throttle peddle position sensor. Does anyone know how to resolve this matter and can explain it to me or know of a video that can help guide me to fixing this problem. It didnt buck or jerk with the old one but gave the code for it to be replaced so I replaced it and now it bucks and or jerks when shifting from 1 into second.

If you simply changed TPS alone and nothing else and the car is an automatic they sold you the wrong TPS and commonly done, the parts guys don't read the notes on the part. The ONLY part there is for manual trans (MTX) and they look the same but most definitely are NOT. Why if you read beginning of this thread people talk about needing another throttle body, Ford pulled a stunt when altering that TPS to change the connector to only work with a later TB to create more expensive parts sales.

There is NO TPS alone for the early '00-'02 zetec with automatic, they dropped it long ago. The ATX and MTX ones look the same but are clocked about 5-7 degrees different and why it doesn't work right. (the jerk calls it out)
