So I did a bunch of searching on here and haven't found a definitive answer to my questions... So here it goes... Have a svt subwoofer enclosure with 8 inch sub I installed in my zx3... Believe I blew the amp with my aftermarket head unit... So I'm going to replace the sub and amp at the same time... So first I understand there are two different svt enclosures? How do I kno which one I have? Also what is the mounting depth on the stock enclosure?
also which sub is everyone running? Don't need anything crazy just want a punctual bass... And what amp? Looking to spend around 200 if possible...
Also before anyone tells me to get a different setup... I appreciate the suggestion but I have a 150 lb mastiff that I put the seats down for in the back of my hatch... So a different setup wouldn't work...
Thanks

Well you should use a DVOM (volt ohm meter) and start checking to see what exactly failed, no power, bad ground, no signal, no remote on, sub blown, break in wires. Maybe the amp is shot but you didn't say you checked, and even if you want to install a new sub setup you should have the basic knowledge to trouble shoot your work and find out.

Next up any 8", low watt (about 100-150watt rms), slim sub should fit the build . I believe 4 1/4" is pretty much maximum depth that you can easily fit. From what I've seen and understand the 02-07 subs boxes are all the same but the woofer was either the generic shitty paper kind or the later red sony "audiophile". To make the new sub fit you will have to make it fit, this could mean making a trim ring to fit the box or just drilling holes and screwing in self tappers. This really depends on nice you want that to be.

The amp, before you start if you have been using the OEM harness you will need to get a wiring kit and upgrade. The amp is gunna be a weird deal because nobody makes a low power monoblock anymore, if they do I don't even have a direction. So you can But a higher ratted monoblock and it will work. you could spend same money and get a 4 channel and power your front speaker an bridge the rear channels to power the sub. If you like the speaker you could look 5 channels which for some reason have 150rms sub channels plus 4 speakers. Last option is a 2 channel but this is honestly the worst option because they have goofy ratings for bridged outputs plus for some reason pricing seems almost the same for something that can handle the power.

Also look into powered amps, they are low watted, self enclosed, thin units that could be wired up to your factory sub harness that is also in your price range.

Sorry about post ... I was pretty tired last night and I wasn't very clear I guess lol... I'm guessing by saying I should have the knowledge to know what failed... You are wondering if I kno what I'm doing... I did trouble shoot... I'm getting power to the amp, signal from the remote.have two seperate grounds, And signal from the rcas... All to the svt plug going into the amp... Now there is no signal coming out of the amp to the sub... I have jl audio low ox wire to run in the car, and the car already has infinity components... So I don't really have time or the care to take the amp apart and check to see what failed...I just figured what better time to upgrade both the amp and sub then now... I def appreciate the answers to my questions... I've considered the ken wood 5x8 powered sub... But like the stock look of svt sub enclosure and carpet cover... I don't mind modifying the box slightly... Even considered building a fiberglass enclosure like we did in my buddy's civic years ago...I think I may go with a ken wood shallow mount 8 and I was considering the 600 watt amp your talking about as a option.. Just wanted to put out feelers to see what people have run... I kno a lot of my searching revealed jl audio subs... But at Xmas time their a bit out of my price range... So thanks for the info above... And everybody keep posting what they have so kno what fits... Thanks...

Im still using the stock amp, and I cut out the cone in the rear of the stock enclosure and sealed it with a plate I cut to fit the hole covered in weather strip sealant and sheet metal screws to tie it into the box. Doing this I managed to easily fit a Kicker 40cws84 into the box and it doesnt sound bad at all, although I listen to alot of punk and metal so slamming bass is my thing.

So just wanted to update people on this... I recently replaced my system in the focus... Using the stock svt focus sub box... I purchased a 8in shallow subwoofer(kenwood)...

And a 350w bridgable kenwood amp...
Image
I did dynomat the inside of the enclosure and sealed the bolt hole in the back with a threaded plug and heated up the hole with a heat gun to help seal it...
Image

the figment of the sub was perfect... Even the screw holes lined up from the stock sub to this sub... I mounted the amp to the carpet under the passenger seat... I wanted the amp to be out of sight and out of the way of the cargo area(as I have a 140lb mastiff puppy that I frequently have in the back and don't want her to be hitting the amp)...

My kinetics power cell under the drivers seat

and the sub in the enclosure behind the carpeting in the back...

The sub hits good... Sounds great... Especially for a 8in (I'm use to 10s and 12s)... It doesn't hit as hard as a 12 with a mono block amp... But it is nice and loud inside the car... But not annoying outside the car... I've outgrown the waking the neighbor bass lol... It provides punctual bass and is a huge upgrade without having to have a huge box in the back... Would highly recommend this setup for anyone... Feel free to ask any questions...
For the record... I do listen to mostly rap, r&b and some alternative rock... And it sounds great on all 3...

Very nice! A local member put the 10 inch version of that sub in the same box. It didn't sound bad at all. I also am currently looking for a different sub solution myself. The factory sub finally gave out well not really but the spider separated from the cone so it can't control the cone movement yada yada same thing that happened to the other one I put in my other focus when I was trying to go to a "small" setup and I also believe that's the same problem that happens with most of the factory subs.

I had some Acoustic Audio 8's so I threw one in the box on the stock amp and it sounded pretty good almost exactly like a factory replacement would. Of course the sound bug as bite me. I felt that the sub was lacking just a tab in the low low range that the stock sub seemed a lil better at. I'm assuming it's because the stock sub was a long throw design compared to the regular design on the AA 8.

So I threw a half blown Sony Explode amp I had laying around from years ago. One channel would be perfect for the 8 since it can't handle a lot to begin with and it doubles whatever the stock amp was putting out maybe even 3x's the power but not much. Just like the other one I put in Ole' Yeller this one started popping. I find myself wanting more and more of it and I'm finding the limits of these cheap 8's quickly as is always the case.

I'm very interested in your setup. I know compared to stock it's much better but how much better? Right now I'm thinking I'm just going to buy a amp and a subthump box since I have 5 12's just laying around right now. But I'm still on the fence.

How much did that sub and amp cost if you don't mind me asking?

I bought the sub for 85 bux shipped and the amp for 65 shipped... The amp kit was like 25 and was extremely flexible and easy to work with... I would say this sub is 3-4 times better than the stock one... But I only ran the stock one for about 15 mins before it cut out... Thot I blew the amp but found the ground wire broke when I was changing over to this... Don't kno and proly never will)... But I def was NOT impressed with the stock sub setup for the time I ran it... Very pleased with this setup... In my expedition. I sold before I bought this car I had a custom sealed box I built for 2 12 kicker cvt competion subs and 2 1000 watt mono amps behind my third row seat... That was stupid loud... This is a great sounding setup... I haven't pushed it to the limit to see if it will rattle my rearview mirror off.. But it def shakes my mirror if I get up to 18 volume (deck goes to 45)... And I don't have the bass turned all the way up... I Thot about doing the sub thump enclosure but this cost me a couple hundred less total and saves me more room for my dog...

That's pricey for a 8 IMO. Well really I can't justify spending money on another speaker when I have 12's laying around. Ahh such a conundrum for me. I want bass but I don't want to give up the space.

Yea I hear ya... I gave up most of my subs and stuff when I moved from NY to WA... So I had to buy new... Which I can't complain... The sub had good reviews every place I looked... I chose the amp because it matched the rms rating of the sub... I like the setup and for my needs it works great... I would say if u have 12s laying around... Either buy the subthump box new or wait to see if someone on here decided to part with one

It'll have to be new since they hardly ever come up. It's like an SVT ORP they are there all over the forum one month and then gone for months. Wish I would have bought one of the ORP's a few months back, now I'm kicking myself in the butt for not buying the two that came up.

I have the svt cat flanges if u wanted to have one made... I cut them off the non working svt cat I got with my conversion... Was gonna make a orp then found a screaming deal on one on my way back from Cali from a member in portland... Let me kno if ur interested... The local shop said I would be in it under 70 bux if I had the flanges...
