Slight zetec idle problem

Background of car:
56,000 miles.
CAI and Cat back exhaust.
No real problems with car, except for the occasional low rpm flutter that I searched and found talked about on here.
But over the past week the idle seems to be very low....like around 500 rpms.
Car doesnt bog when it does this.
Even stays low when I take it out of gear and put it in neutral.
Is this a common Focus problem?
I know it never idled "hgh" before, but this is really low.
Upon initial start up,it seems fine, but after warming the car up and driving for a short time,it starts doing this.
Ideas?
Help appreciated!

Curious, do you have an auto?
I think I'm having a similar problem, although it was like you were saying a while back and has gotten a little better, but it was WAY bad at one point in time. Does it do it when you're slowing down to stop, then get better when you come to a complete stop? That's what mine does, and when RPM dips the car shakes pretty bad for like half a second. I don't really have any solutions for you, but I'm going to just go through a few things just to make sure.
Fuel filter? Air filter (that's kinda a stretch)? Spark plugs and/or wires?
If you've checked all those out then I know of one solution, you could get it tuned and set your idle RPM higher. Other than that I can't help.

Make sure you tightened your intake couplings really good, check to see if the MAF sensor is facing the right way. Check to see if you plugged the TPS ( if you unplugged it). that’s all I can think off. Maybe you have a vacuum leak somewhere.

My ZX3 is an ATX.
Car doesnt shake,it just dips pretty bad at complete stops.
Air filter is a 5 month old injen....
Going to find out if its throwing codes today.
Got a scan tool, never used it on a ZX3 before.
Where do you hook up the scan tool?
Looked under the dash, different than an Escort!

The IAC is under the TB on the intake mani. Unfortanatly, its between the head and the intake runners. Its not impossible to remove with the intake mani still installed, but its difficult (I know, I've done it 3 times now). Luckily, its only 2 bolts (either 8mm or 10mm, I think 8 but I don't remember)

Once removed, you will see 2 openings, one is empty, the other has a rod with a plunger attached to it that sits in between the holes (the valve itself) and the rod connects to the main part of the IAC (you should be able to see how it works very quickly, and if not, stop working on cars and leave it to people who know) Just clean all the gunk and debris off the rod part and the inside of the holes where the valve is carefully (anywhere air flows), and it should work much better.

I cleaned one on my friends car, that was the first one I did, and I replaced one on my last sedan at 80k miles, and I just replace the one on my current sedan at over 100k miles, but both times they could have been cleaned, I just feel better with new parts.

I have the same prob but it don't bother me, I had a guy ask me if my car had cam's in it! LOL! And of course I said no but do ya want to race, after he heard me pull off and heard the CAI and the belt I hve on the car "makes it sound supercharged" "don't ask how" he said hell no!! LOL!! We've tried to find out why it sounds like that but couldn't find any thing!! To many people have wanted to race and when I'm not in the mood I jusat rev it up and they back off, crazy huh?!?!?!?!

What can be used to clean the MAF sensor?
Havnt been able to tear into this properly as the weather has been pretty bad...
But the problems getting worse:
Now when I turn on the defroster, the defroster sounds like its really working hard and the car is idling worse.
Still not stalling,but getting close.
Can a solvent be used to clean the MAF or just compressed air?

I have a habit of explaining things poorly, so here are two pics. I took a dirty IAC that I had laying around, took a pic, then cleaned it to show the difference. I use CRC electronics cleaner and either a soft toothbrush or q-tips to clean inside. You can see on the dirty pic all the debris.

I use the same product to clean the MAF, and all I do it spray it down and let it dry.

Hope that helps some.

Geez....you just had this lying around?
I wish I had parts on hand.
I called about getting a new idle control valve and OUCH....98.00
So,I am cleaning mine tomorrow.
Exactly where is the Idle Valve located?
I am also cleaning the MAF sensor, and installing my Focus Central 65 mm TB.
So,the TB will be off as will the MAF.
A little guidance and I am set.
Thanks to all who replied and MACH,You go above and beyond.
Its appreciated.

Well, today we worked on my ZX3.
Cleaned the MAF sensor, and switched on the Focus Central 65 mm Throttle Body.
We couldn get to the IAC sensor.....but at least we know where its located now.
The idle is improved but I feel that once we clean the IAC,the problem will be gone.
I also re-installed the factory ram air hose that I had previously taken off for my Injen High Flow intake (this is the intake that retains the bottom half of he stock airbox)
The Focus Central TB makes a world of difference.
After resetting the ECU,the idle was noticeably different.
Was a little erratic at first but after a minute or two smoothed down to a constant 750 rpms.
I will now call my car: Twitchy
That TB was nuts pulling out of the driveway.
I quickly got the hang of it though.
No sticking problems with it at all (Thanks Zexy)
So,I still will clean the IAC....but now I am looking for the header for it.
Still up in the air as to shorty or long tube (emissions here are tough)
But much Thanks go to Mach,I couldnt have done it without you.....even though you wouldnt drive the short 6 hours to help me here :)
LoL.
Thanks Guys!
