if just looking for stock replacements kyb gr-2 worked well for me. Looking to stiff up the ride a bit but still nice for a DD look into the st170 shocks/struts.

Since you have an spi i can't imagine you are looking for high-performance.

My goal is to have reliable quality. Don't need an upgrade and I don't want low quality which starts squeeking after a while.

 

frpp is really common for your goal. otherwise kyb is fine

 

Once or twice a year, there's usually a rebate on shocks/struts................

I like the kyb's as just slightly sportier.

No idea what's avail. in Germany as a stock equivalent replacement.

Factory ones are pretty decent, gas charged (nitrogen) units that last a long time.

Wouldn't want anything less than the original type, though anything is better than shot ones.

You might try Sachs, as they are an OEM to several European makes. They have a touring level shock that I've seen once or twice on VW's as a replacement. Seem to be a good alternative to the Motorcraft replacement, which should be widely available in Europe.
