Ran out of gas in my 2012ti

Well not me ... my daughter. Because the new Focus does not have a gas cap, like many new Fords, it makes it almost impossible to fill it with gas with a regular gas can with out the orange special "nozzle". (Not sure if it is actually called a "nozzle")The nozzle came with our 2014 Expedition, but not our 2012 Focus.

Does anyone know if Ford will provide the "nozzle" to people that bought early models of cars with out a gas cap and did not receive the "nozzle"?[scratch]

Nozzle came with my 2012 and 2014 Foci... Is located under rear cargo area near spare... Is actually not orange, but white in the Focus... I am pretty sure yours should have one seeing as it is a higher trim than mine... Just look for it under there... I believe the first time I pulled mine out it was actually attached to that foam block with the jack parts under the spare.

My 2012 was built in April of 2012 and had one... They must have forgotten yours... I do love these cars... Went from my '12 Tuxedo Black to a '14 Ingot Silver... And am hoping to talk my fiancee into a '15 Performance Blue or Blue Candy this fall.

..... and if you want the locking gas cap, it's part # 8U5Z-9C268-B

I think the same cap fits all the new Ford cars and trucks. I bought one for my 2011 Fiesta and when I bought my Focus I used the same one.

I think the whole capless filler thing was a stupid idea. You need the funnel if you add any gas additives such as HEET. If you try to pour a bottle of an additive in the filler tube without the funnel, it will go down a bypass instead and leak right out onto the ground.

The main reason ford did this was to save the customer time and money believe it or not. By using this system it cuts down on check engine lights due to the customer not securing the gas cap properly and getting an evaporative emissions code for an evap leak

The '04 book lists 13.2 as std., with 14.0 for the 2.3 versions.

12 is the most I've put in, normal fill seldom hits 10 as the gauge is near empty before it'll take that much.

It is very bad for the fuel pump to run out of fuel.
I would never tempt fate again*.
Once was enough on my SVT Contour. Ran out of gas, two weeks later the fuel pump died. Not a coincidence.

I cannot figure out why folks trust the miles to empty??? Maybe I am just old?

Never ran out on my Contour SE but ran past 0 miles 2x in the Focus w/o running out. I knew I was low, but late to hockey which is over 20 miles each way...

I think I put 12 gallons in, so it was very close to empty.

The car apparently has a fuel level sensor since the miles to empty goes way up when I fill it...and I assume if I filled it halfway, the miles to empty would increase half as much.

Since it has a sensor, I trusted the miles to zero reading.

I've never tested this myself, but I assume "Miles to Empty" factors in human psychology. What I mean by that is a traditional analogue gas gauge isn't truly empty when you get to "E", there's usually a gallon or two left below that. So I would assume when you are at 0 MTE, there'd still be gas in the tank. A person would have to drive well past "0 MTE" to completely run out of gas.

They design it this way to protect fuel pumps.

300 - mostly city driving? Should get at least 350 miles if you let it get w/in a gallon of empty (11 gallons). I get over 400 (the car predicts around 450 miles to empty in spring/summer/fall).

I got a tad under 35 in winter but over 35 in summer in mixed driving. It's a 5 speed hatch - the worst combo. I got the rated highway mileage from my last car too (Contour VSE - 6).

, a driving range of 300 miles just isn't enough.

It's leaps better than my 07. I couldn't even do a week of driving to work and back without filling. I can now go an honest 7 days most times. 450 miles or so

When my fuel light went on recently I had to drive 30kms and put in 43 litres of fuel (usually it's around 38 w/o dipping into reserve fuel)..anyone know how many miles or km you can drive before running out of fuel (roughly)..I was getting nervous.

You can absolutely drive until you run out of fuel.

Your mileage may vary.

I drove about 410 miles on a tankful until my car ran out and I coasted to the side of the freeway.

Another poster here claims he went over 600 miles on a tankful.......

My car said 20 miles to empty when I filled last night. Added 11.203 gallons. 423 miles. 37.76 mpg by hand, 39.4 per CPU.

Running my first tank of 93 in the car to see what, if any, difference I see on mpg.

I think what I'm trying to ask is when the fuel light goes on, roughly how many miles or km can you drive before you run out of fuel, I would like to know so next time I'm stuck far away from any gas station I'll at least have an idea..

#38 ·
Your mileage may vary. Reserve fuel seems to be at or less than 2 gallons of fuel remaining in the tank. It will estimate based on your average MPG, but if the driving conditions change and vary wildly so too will both the actual range and the estimated range.

Usually in my case I've seen the light come on anywhere from 38-50 miles of estimated range remaining, which usually plummets quickly to reporting very few miles remaining after only a few more miles driven. Some cars over estimate fuel economy, others underestimate it. Depends on how they were driven over a certain period of time.

You never want to push it, but sometimes you are in that situation of having light come on and you are far enough away from a gas station to fret a bit...

Lowest I've been is about 5 miles left on the tank. At that point you are probably dragging up the crap from the tank however.

BTW... what is this nozzle for exactly? Why can you not use a normal spout on a gas can? I do not have one in my car, I checked.

#44 ·
The spout can better engage the two spring loaded parts in the filler neck that allow the filler flap in the tube to open.

Also, these days it is rare to find "crap" in the bottom of the tank. I have pulled tanks from vehicles with near 200,00o miles on them and there has been no foreign matter in the tank.

Normal spout on a gas can could get stuck in the "capless" system, we've seen reports of gas station nozzles getting stuck if a stainless cap at the end is loose creating a sharp edge that won't pull out easily.

Funnel is smooth & intended for adding from bottles/gas cans as a means of opening the cap without troubles.
