I'm about to start modding my focus and i would like some input from our experts here. I've never actually modded a car, this will be my first soo please bare with me [duh]

I've been looking through ebay and I found two potential models but i dunno the difference between both of them of even if there worth it

Sorry for the big ass link lol :p This one says its a "Short Ram" Intake... What does that actually mean? Would you recommend this to anyone ?

This is what seems to be like a basic intake. Basically what ive been seeing in most of the fofo around here. Again what are the differences between a short ram intake and this one? Louder Noise? More HP? Im not looking into boosting my HP to 300 with this lol i just want a more of a crisp cleaner sound when i rev it up a notch [grinking] And once more, Would you recommend either of these.

I dont want to spend too much for an intake for now since this is my first time modding stuff. Later on when i understand the mechanics and what it actually does ill go for a more expensive one [duh]

PS. Sorry for the bad english lol. I'm originally french

Welcome to the family!

A short ram intake will get heat soak from the engine and you will get little gains in HP. But with a cold air intake you will get colder air because of no heat soak. Also have to be cautious with how much rain fall you have in your area. You can hydrolock your engine with a cold air intake. Also the cold air intake will give better HP then a short ram intake. You can also just remove the silencer off your stock intake to give it a nice sound. I just dropped in a K&N filter into my stock intake and added the bigger SVT snorkle.

you will want to watch out for no name brands. when the diameter of the piping is off even by a mm, it will throw off the MAF sensor. you could get lucky and be just fine, alot of people do, but alot of people have problems too. I would stick w/ a name brand. If you go w/ that setup, at least change the filter to a K&N or AEM dry filter. Also for the AEM CAI, not SRI, you can buy a bypass filter, and you never have to worry about hydrolock then. I've been through huge puddles w/ mine, filter competely submerged, and i was still fine. so don't let the full CAI scare you, all you need is the bypass valve.

just remember you get what you pay for.
your best bet if you live in areas where there is snow, rain is either a short ram or a volant.
the volant is a great intake.
i would reccomend a pipercross if they sell them in canada?

dont get that short ram. its bigger and will make your car throw codes. that CAI is the same as the first one i bought for my car. good intake, never threw any codes, but i did nearly blow my car up once from sucking water up in it. if you dont get alot of rain where you are id suggest that CAI. otherwise just take the silencer out of your stock air box and drop in a K&N filter with an SVT snorkle and be happy. there are actually alot of people on here that will fight tooth and nail saying the stock with K&N and svt snorkle actually makes more power than any aftermarket intake. i dont know about all that as ive never tried it but it would be better than any short ram intake you can buy.

to each his own, there is an intake for everyone and everyone has asked this Q before take a look around with the search tool, you will find way more then you need to become educated and make the right decision for you, and of course i have to plug the volant, i love that thing it is one of my favorite mods that i have done.

i have stock exhaust and jus intake and it sounds vicious when i punch the gas, i have yet to hear a car sond as good as mine with jus an intake. and with my setup it puts the filter right where the old airbox used to sit.......but the down fall to anything than cold air is sucking in heat from the engine and u tend to lose alittle horse power at lower speeds until u can get air to run into the engine area.....

I had a Mac intake on my car for a while and it was loud omg it was loud. Only problem I had with it was it rubbed the hose leading to the top of the egr valve and eventually put a hole in it which caused a cel. I just cut the hose and put it back on and the light went out.
