Ok i have an 02 zetec. I'm changing the alternator because the stock one is shot. I have the two retaining bolts out but the thing will not budge. Hane's says it should turn and lift out but this thing feels like it's still attached???!!!


please help!

The Alt is TIGHT sometimes VERY TIGHT in the brackets a long big screw driver will work it out

I've tried a rubber mallet.... it's not budging an inch... not even an 1/8th of an inch. It feels like the engine is sitting on top of it?

put the 2 bolts back in and leave around a 1/4" space from the bracket. tap the heads of the bolts towards the alternator. a liitle bit of penetrating oil on the rear of the alternator bracket helps.

wait.... put them in and leave them sticking out a 1/4 inch? or only screw them in 1/4 inch

im assuming he means to put em in first then take em out 1/4th of the way out...

ok, thread them in all the way the back them out some, hit heads of bolts with hammer. The threads are like odd shaped blocks that are pressed into the aluminum bracket, they freeze up.

how can you even get a hammer in there.... and even if I do I don't think I could hit the lower bolt

small hammer, long pry bar and hammer, or put a pry bar between alternator and bracket and pry (bolts removed).

put it between the bracket and the alternator, and have fun.........

that's what it took for my buddies to come out.

maybe try pouring penetraing oil into the bolt holes, reinstall the bolts loosely, and start her up and drive...off into the sunset.

I cannot get this thing out... it just will not budge!!??!?! My other worry is even if I do get it out after all this will the new one simply slide in or will it have to be forced in.

ok so after hours of beating the car.... I've finally free'd the alternator from the bracket... however.... my name is not houdini.... how the hell do I get it out??? It's too big to fit through the hole?

just take the thing out its not made of glass. just get it out how it comes, there is no "magic" secret.

wow, finally got it changed.... I've lost skin and blood, however road grime and dirt does stop the bleeding very well. holy shit... I've worked on cars for years, changed countless alternators and never have I ever experianced anything like that.
