Gents, and Ladies (of course),

I'm looking for opinions on my ZX3 build-up. I intend to run the SVT intake system, FR2 cams with adjustable cam gears, SVT header with 2.25 back, 8.5lb flywheel, decked and ported head (amount of decking/compression still questionable), and the Xcal2 dyno-tuned. I'm hoping to be between 150 and 170 WHP, do I have a chance? I'm very new to tuner cars so be blunt if you must. Feel free to offer suggestions on other build-up tips and guesses on what my actual WHP will be. I'm not ready to sink the money into FI, maybe next summer.

Thanks,

Update, I am now going to go with SVT pistons and rods to increase the compression. I will still deck and port the head, but the porting may be done by my own hands so I won't include that as a positive with regards to performance. Am I correct in believing that the SVT rods/pistons will bring me up to just under 9:1 compression? Thoughts quickly will be appreciated so I can pay the man for his SVT loot.

When are you having your cams done? I'm probably going up there sometime over the next month again.

I'll check out that site tonight when I'm not at work.

And thanks for the tip on the drag strip. I'll keep that in mind while getting whooped. Will this car, stock, beat a pretty stock Civic?

Let me know how the 3s work. I use this thing as my daily driver and I plan on taking it to Washington DC (12-13 hours) in August so I want it fairly smooth (although I could put the stock motor back in for that trip).

Thanks for the other tips. I'dd address them as money allows. I do plan to port the head as much as the flow bench tells me can be done. Is it true on these heads that intake valves don't make much, if any difference? The guy told me that almost all of the 4cylinder, 4 valve per cylinder heads only need exhaust porting. Another thing with decking the head, at 10.5:1 will I need the stronger rods? What is the barrier for running regular gas versus high octane? I'm guessing around 9.5:1.

Keep the suggestions coming, I need all of this info and plan to keep coming back to this thread for the next year or so if it keeps growing.

Nikiter, what's the deal with Foci up in Canada? I have a machine in Windsor that we installed a couple of weeks ago and every other car on the road was a focus. A ton of ZX5s too. I felt right at home up there (except for the border crossing).

i would reccomend the decking to be no more than .040 that will bring you up to around 10:5:1 and grab a coil pack and gap your plugs to .060 for the high rpm smoothness. you can get to 155whp at the highest with that. what about upgrading the fuel components? if you want 170 i would suggest upgrading the valve train and porting the head, then getting 30# injectors and an svt fuel pump. you can save some money on the headers unless you already them, the obx ones on ebay work just fine. little things add up on these cars too, motor mounts help the numbers, a 180 thermostat helps on the street and if you want 170 the FR2's will make it hard not impossible just damn near it. i would reccoment the FR3's or some crower 2 or 3's they'll get you there for sure.

looks like you have a good setup going...if it were me i would go with a 2.5 exhaust instead of a 2.25, but i doesnt really make a whole lot of difference..but if i am correct the flexpipe on the svt headers are 2.5 and it would just be better to have it flow the rest of the way in a 2.5 exhaust, but that's just what i think...good luck with the build and post pics up when your done!

That is going to be some serious cash and a lot of work bro. Good luck. I think that if you want an all motor build up, thats not bad. I think you could get the power you're looking for, probably just depends on how aggressive you get the timing dialed in.

I don't know how much compression the stock rods will handle, probably not a whole lot more. Might want to consider replacing your rod and crank bearings and dropping in some new forged connecting rods if you want to do some sweet boosting in the future or really want to go wild with the timing and compression.

I would PM Tom, he seems to have a lot of Zetec bulid experience, i do not.

I forgot, I have the UDP too (crank only). It's out being hard-coated right now and will hopefully be back before the weekend.

The dif is too rich for my blood. I am running on fumes already and the real work won't start until hopefully tomorrow night.

Any thoughts on decking the head? How much, how much compression will the stock rods handle?

That sounds pretty good. I'd say you should have atleast 150hp after a good tune with all those mods, but 170 may be a little far depending on how well the head machining goes.

u have some nice mods on man....all ur pretty much missing is like under drive pulleys.......i'd say ur at 150whp right now

maybe u should look into gettin Spec stage 2 clutch and torsen differential.......oh and all 3 engine mounts.....damn after that its gonna be one sweet focus

post some pics too
