I have an 05 ZX4 SES 5 speed
and per the book it recommends:
Motorcraft Full synthetic manual transmission fluid
Ford Part number XT-M5-QS Ford specs: WSD-M2C200-C

What is a good retail equivalant to this and how reliable is it. or am I better to pay the 27.00 per quart from Ford.

WOW 27.00 per quart from Ford. Is there another Ford any where around I only had to pay 19 bucks per quart when I did mine.

The Ford stuff is very good. But if you live in an area where it does not get cold much. (not really below freezing) then any of the Mercon type transmission fluids will work fine.
I used Mobile One ATF in my Contour SVT for many years. no problem.
The Ford Spec stuff is fabulous, but is not really required.. The best thing about the Ford stuff is when temps are below freezing.
Otherwise it really does not perform any better than stuff like Mobile One.
Royal Purple also has a following for ATF fluid for the manual transaxle.
And yes it IS ATF fluid used in the manual transaxle. Mercon Type F NOT a type A (GM cars)
For a new car under warranty certainly use the official Ford product. All others can switch.
And no you do not need to flush the case when switching.

I am in utah.. and temps do regularly drop below freezing.

I want to stick to the Synthetic as I deliver pizza in the car and want it to last.

My car has 193000 miles on it. I just bought it, and shifting was notchy. Very awkward to go into 1 and 3. Now its like butter. No leaks I can tell. Autozone was 9.99 for castrol I think, 10.99 for Mobil 1 and 19.99 for royal purple. I couldn't bring myself to pay that much for royal putrple or the ford stuff o gne car.

I'm satisfied so far.

i ran amsoil 10-40w euro motor oil in my tranny for a couple years with no issues , when i swapped it out i was gunna use the ford stuff but it was so expensive , so now ive been using penzoil syncromesh for almost 2 years with no issues excpet for a leaky axle seal , not sure if it was caused by the switch or due to mileage 180k , but its been leaking for over a year and i just top it off every couple months. no negative effects.
