Intelligent Access "Key Battery Low Replace Soon" message

Hope someone can help, since two Ford dealerships have thrown up their hands and said, "I don't know how to fix this."

Yesterday, when I got in my car (it has 42M on it and is almost 3 years old), it said my Key Battery was low. I stopped at Interstate Battery and they figured out how to replace both FOB button batteries (with help from a YouTube video). Unfortunately, the message is still coming up when I start the car. I even removed the round steering stalk plastic piece and stuck my FOB directly inside (2nd dealership said to try this since it possibly could help reset itself if it was inserted directly). Two stops and starts later, the message is still there. The car starts fine. The doors unlock fine. No driveability problems. Is there ANY way to reset this message to make it go away (like the oil change reset sequence that I occasionally perform, for instance)? Both dealerships said if I brought the car in, they "could take a look." Read...CHARGE ME $$ for trying a bunch of things.

I may be a woman, but I am very computer savvy and can follow reasonable instructions. I do my own MyFord Touch updates without help. I can navigate my car's gizmos without any issues. The guy at the dealership also insinuated that my iPhone could be the culprit. Huh? I connect it ALL the time when I'm in the car, and this has never been an issue.

So, with that, can anyone give me some simple advice or am I stuck spending my hard-earned money having some dude scratch his head for a few hours?

Thanks!

Kabigon--How long did it take for the message to eventually disappear on your car? Looks like you have the same make/model as my Focus. So far, it's been four days and the message is still displaying each time I start the car. The batteries that were installed were fresh 10-year expiration date batteries, so I'm not concerned that they were past their shelf life. Both FOBs give me the same message. Disconnecting the battery seems like a slipshod way to accomplish something, in my opinion.

Hey, everyone!

I just want to jump in real quick with a few things. I do not recommend a battery pull (on your vehicle) unless it is advised or done by your dealer. Also SYNC/MFT is not tied in to Intelligent Access Key (IAK), so a fuse pull for SYNC is not needed. For questions or issues with IAK, please shoot a private message over to Todd. Here's the link to his profile:

Hope you're all having a great week!

I had the same problem occur on my 2011 C-Max Titanium last weekend, and after replacing the batteries in the key remote, the error message remained.

I took my car into my local Ford dealer and they ended up having to carry out a BCM software update. This cleared the alarm issue.

If your key fob battery needs changing there is no need to go to the dealer to reset the message on the trip computer.you just use the arrow keys on the steering wheel and navigate to the information menu -->system status and press the ok button to reset.

Was the BCM software update expensive?

Hey folks!

If you're currently experiencing concerns, your best bet is to check with your Ford Dealer for proper diagnosis. In addition, please send me a PM with your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, mileage, and preferred servicing dealership.

We'll go from there.

Hey everyone,

I completely understand that it is frustrating to write in or call and be told that you need to have your dealer help you. There are a couple reasons why you'll get that response. First, in order for your CSM to know how they can help, your vehicle needs a diagnosis. Second, dealers are independently owned and operated, so there are some issues that they are going to make the final call on. In those cases, I (or a phone rep) will usually encourage you to visit another dealer for assistance. Finally, and unfortunately, I'm unable to provide a vehicle diagnosis through the computer, which is another reason your dealer is involved.

A lot of my job entails assessing your concern and getting you to the appropriate party to best get that concern resolved as quickly as possible. A lot of the time that is your CSM, because they talk to your dealer on a regular basis and are best at getting your vehicle repaired, getting you a rental, financial assistance, etc.

I've enjoyed working with you all, and hope to continue moving forward. If you have any questions, let me know.

Hey guys,

I have something I want you to try (it's worked on a few vehicles we've tried it on): hit one of the fob buttons after the battery has been replaced while car is running; it should turn off the message.

Please let me know if this corrects the issue in a private message so I may get it recorded.

OK same message here about low remote battery. I have a hunch. Car is almost 3 years old just like many of you who said the same thing and I get same message using either fob. After changing my remote batteries, I put a volt tester on the "old batteries".....Guess what? the old batteries are just fine. 3 volts and 3.1 volts, right where they're suppose to be. New batteries show 3.1 and 3.2 volts. Go figure!! So it appears that this message is time generated. Pissed off that Ford won't tell me anything other than to change the batteries that don't need to be changed. You got me once, won't get me again. I check voltage first on old batteries.

If you can't get rid of the message try this.

4682 - 2012-2014 Focus - Intelligent Access Key Battery Low Message Does Not Reset After Replacing The Battery - Service Tip
Some 2012-2014 Focus vehicles equipped with Intelligent Access Push Button Start may exhibit a Key Battery Low message that remains on after replacing the battery in the key fob. If this concern is observed, perform the following procedure that allows the vehicle to properly sample the key fob battery level. With only one (1) fob near the vehicle, start the engine. With the engine running, press the Lock or Unlock button on the key fob one time. Repeat this procedure with all additional affected key fobs. When the vehicle properly samples the new key battery level the message will no longer be present.

Simple Fix

Having read a few of these threads today I have now fixed the problem of the message not going away. I had replaced the battery and everything worked, but the message always came up for a few seconds on starting the car. The fix seems to be just pressing the lock or unlock on the remote so the car takes an actual signal from the remote (as opposed to just walking up to car and letting it unlock itself). Started the car, message was gone. Problem solved. Thanks to all on here who helped.
