How to prevent scratches from a metal rear license plate frame?

I've gotten sick of waiting for my plates to show up and finally took the dealer-issue plastic plate frames off my car this evening. When I went to put on my old metal frame, it looked like it'd be in regular contact with the paint. I don't really want to get rid of the frame as it's got sentimental value, but I also don't want to scratch up the car.

My plan is to put foam tape along the top of the frame, but I'm not sure how well that will hold up through weather or a car wash. Anybody got a better idea?

Thanks!

Dynomat also offers a piece that is cut for license plates that would probably help. You can usually find them at most all part stores, maybe even walmart. It's designed to cover the whole backside of your plate and should insulate your plate from your body. I believe it cost around $15.

Rubber bump stops that you have inside you cupboard doors, its the same thing they use to keep hood deflectors from banging against your hood. The small version should still allow your bolts to screw in.
