High idle rpm

Hmm well i've noticed lately that my car is been running weird ,

On cold start up it shoots right up to like 1900 - 2000 rpm and it stays for awhile .

When I put it in Reverse it goes to approx 1500 rpm and it stays there for about 5 - 10 min of driving to warm up then it drops to regular rpm to idle , While the rpm is at 1500 rpm it pulls on the car trying to make it go I don't even have to press throttle .

Another issue i've noticed is when im parked at light in drive the rpm needle moves slightly and I can feel a vibration right through my seat which goes away if I pop it in neutral. All this stuff hasn't happened last fall or winter.

Im guessing my exhaust is the culprit , is it common issue when installing exhaust ?

Depending on the outside temp. your 1900 to 2000 RPM on a "cold" start, sounds about right......but it should start to slowly drop after a few seconds and then continue to drop off, sort of in steps, to a normal idle after a few minutes. Yours does sound like it's taking longer than normal to drop off to normal. Putting the tranny in gear at lets say at 1500 RPM will try to "pull" the car. That's normal. However if the idle issue has changed since any under the hood maintenance or work has been accomplished, and because of the "vibration" at idle in Drive, I would check for any vacuum leaks. The exhaust in itself shouldn't be related to this issue, I don't believe, but during that process maybe something was disturbed, like a vacuum hose for example. Make sure that all the air intake duct connectors between the air filter and the TB are tight. Is everything else stock? The SES light is out when the engine is running?

Since I live in california and have that retarded emissions thing I have to deal with. When starting my focus when it cold it shoot up to 1500-2000 RPM than something will kick in then the RPM will drop round about 1400 RPM so.... IDK if canada has those emission package, and I would assume it to ME it's normal operation.

When the car is warm when starting then it runs great, but like I said when starting it up.... it's all rough and what not, but when the car wars up and gets a move on then it great.

I live in New York, which also mandates CA emmisions standards for all cars sold here. Mine also runs kinds rough when I first start it in the morning. It revs way up then tries to settle down but does it unsteadily. Runs fine after a minute or less.

yeah well I guess its normal then , im gonna check my main vac hose since I had removed it before and make sure it aint leaking also gonna check my plugs.

Another thing is ive noticed lately is the gas pedal gets stiff and hard to push is this something that just needs to be greased or ? gonna tackle it later once it warms up a lil .

It sounds fairly normal, although its possible that you may have an exhaust leak between your flex and "cat"-back. That would give your O2 sensor an odd reading which could account for a prolonged high idle.

Stiff gas pedal is probably just the cable binding up a bit. I think a little bit of graphite lube should do the trick for that.

Take notes!! is your AC/heater on when this happens? Try turning it off, then back on and see if it revs up. Is it a constant rev at 1.5K rpm or is it dropping and going back up? If it does this when your AC is on im told it's something to do with your Throttle body sensor being off or something..

no ac on , heat and defrost on I think its normal just wondering since 1900 seems high to warm but everyone elses does it to .

Many cars idle quite high when the engine is cold. Its just the roughness and unevenness on this car that annoyed me. Doesn't matter if the A/C or DEF is on or off.

I think cars with CA emissions have a slightly leaner fuel mixture that causes some minor issues with cold engines. My old 99 Dakota with CA emissions was the same way.
