Hesitation After Intake Install

I just recently reinstalled my K&N intake system.

I did a few shakedown drives and everything seemed great.

Unfortunately the past few drives my car has been hesitating in lower rpm's from a standstill or after I shift.

I though it might be a leak but after a once over everything seems snug and it still hesitates.

The car is a stick, any ideas?

Check the air sensor and make sure it's positioned properly...car may also drive rough until it gets used to the greater air readings

Really struggled with this today and ended up installed the original intake.

Everything is good now. Going to a close look at these clamps and piping tomorrow. There must be a weak link somewhere.

I've had two K&N intakes, the open element one like the OP, and the one with the airbox lid and open-ended filter. I've gone back to the factory setup (minus snorkel) both times because I miss the low-rpm torque especially in hot summer temps. Take a look at dyno sheets of the K&N intake and you'll see why. To me, the loss of low-rpm torque is not worth the high-rpm horsepower advantage.

Snorkel delete + performance air filter (K&N, AEM, etc) is the best all-around setup IMO. If you want more noise, remove the silencer and plug the hole. The open-ended filters work OK when ambient temps are not so high (below 70F).

Considering the type of driving I do and my terrain (very hilly) low and mid range torque are what I need. Basically you are constantly coming out of the hole. So I'm with you on this one; Torque = Win.

Ive been driving without the stock airbox lid for over a month, and while i dont have any data
To confirm, i dont notice any lack of power or bogging in pretty good heat 25 to 30+ celcius....going
To keep monitoring it...leaving lid off while i work on custom intake.

Appreciate the information, gentlemen. FFhb13, are you running an aftermarket air filter? Which one?

Basically what you were doing was creating a hot air intake so it is no surprise performance was worse, and especially given how cramped the focus engine bay is. Cold air intakes have an actual benefit and the snorkel path is a semi cold intake (not a proper one as it is right by the radiator)

It's good that you don't notice it. There is no way that you are pulling in cool air after sitting at a stop.

Try running the Torque app with OBD-II reader for IAT data.

With the Steeda intake, sitting in traffic in Houston heat, the IAT's get up in the 170-180 range.

As soon as things start rolling 5+mph, it's 3-6 degrees over ambient.

I can deal with the requirement of a little more throttle control for the boost in power I feel that I get on the top end, but that's just this guy's opinion.
