I have a Flowmaster 40 under my truck that I dont drive so I was thinking about cutting it out and puting it under my Focus.

Its a 2.5 in. inlet/outlet so I was thinking about sleeving the stock Focus piping up to that then the muffler then sleeving down to 2 in. for the tail pipe.

Yes? [thumb]
No?[thumbd]
Will it even sound good?[dunno]

EDIT: Mods please move to ZETEC performance. I posted under the wrong forum.

I'm moving this to Zetec Performance Chat, Technical chat is for technical discussions relating to general maintenance, electrical issues, engine trouble, and recalls. I've heard about a few FF's who put Flowmaster Mufflers on their cars. Personally, I don't care for anything except the larger 3 chamber mufflers- none of which will fit in a Focus.

sleeving the exhaust up to 2.5 is a waste of time and effort. go to a local muffler shop, have them take off the factory exhaust from the flex pipe back and have them make you a custom 2.5 inch flex pipe back exhaust using that muffler. it might cost 100 bucks and it will sound better, perform better, and wont fall apart

Thats the answer I thought I would get. I can do the part from the flex to the muffler since its all straight pipe then take it to Midas and have them finish it out the back.

Does flowmasters system for the Focus use a 40 series?

i doubt it. if memory serves me (which it only does about 3 times out of 10) the 40 series is used only in kits for V8 cars

The garage I hang at does custom exhaust systems. They don't recommend Flowmasters on anything but V8's. I've had them on V6's and they sounded crappy! Turbos sound really good on V6's. The owner told me that he really hasn't figured out what is the best sounding muffler for 4 bangers yet but, he's leaning toward Magnaflows.

Personally, I think the oversized glasspack (10" round case) of the MBRP sounds great not raspy at all. There are actually 2 mufflers in that system, one glass pack resonator, and then the oversized case muffler.

As far as Flowmasters go, 90% of what you've ever heard from FM is the 2 chamber mufflers. That's the "classic" Flowmaster sound. El Crappo IMO. I remember when FM first started selling mufflers- they only had one model. Their claim to fame back then was that your car would be quiet and have the same hp output as if it had no muffler at all. That was the original series, now represented by the 50 series. The 2 chamber 40 series is just a turbo muffler without the fiberglass packing. The only problem with the old "suitcase" mufflers is that you need a lot of space to install them.

FM does make a 2.25" 60 series 3 chamber muffler for sport compacts, but that line is represented by a Neon in their ad [thumbd]

Never said there was anything wrong with being *******. I was commenting that I think it sounds ******* and it made me lol. I cant have anything against ******** anyway. I live in the deep south. ;)

The 60 series is limited to 2.25, and is quieter than the 40. More than likely it will give a deeper tone like the quieter FM mufflers do.

FM's charts show what fits, not what sounds good because what sounds "good" is an opinion. There's not much space under there. Fortunately, I have much more space- yay wagons.

I've heard some other exhaust systems, and it's hard to tell. I like deep low tones. The MBRP I have on my car does just that with an ORP resonator. Once you lay down on the accelerator it gets loud, but that too is an opinion. I do my best to wear earplugs when working around high noise areas, and I'm fairly sure there are a lot of people younger than me who have less hearing.
