I'm driving a 2012 Ford Focus that's got higher mileage and is out of warranty. Off and on I've had CEL P144A show up. Within the last few weeks the car has struggled to start after filling up any amount of fuel. After initial startup it will start up fine. Took it to the dealer who diagnosed that it needed a new Purge Valve and Emissions Canister replacement. I bought this and this to try and replace myself after Ford estimated that it'd cost $776 to do the repairs. I replaced the Evaporative Canister Vent Solenoid Valve but returned the Vapor Canister Purge Valve after realizing it didn't fit. I've seen a lot of mixed results online about what I need to replace to get my car back in normal operating condition.

So...what is it exactly that I need to replace and where could I locate it on my vehicle?

If your charcoal canister has saturated up, changing those parts will really do nothing. I note that dealership told you to change the CANISTER itself. You're just changing valves to it, not it.

Theoretically the canister itself should be able to be cleaned out to work like new but late model and no knowledge of it or its' construction so no way am I going there although I have done others before to work fine.

FYI, if you are one of those that likes to fillup every last drop they can in tank, well, how that problem can come about. One should ALWAYS stop at the trip off of fuel nozzle now, overfilling makes for damage issues now.

Thanks! I replaced the Valve Solenoid yesterday and that wasn't terrible. Also utilized the opportunity to clean out the canister. See if that helps once I replace this hose as well.

I used to be the kind to pump fuel to the last drop but after my Fuel Pump failed (replaced under warranty) I started to change my ways in both overfilling and letting it run to almost E.
