Dome light not coming on automatically at night

2012 FF Hatchback new owner here.

I've had to work late a couple nights this last week, and I noticed as I unlocked and got into my car that it was pitch black inside, which didn't make me feel very safe in a dark parking lot (The footwells illuminated, however). I looked in the owner manual, and all it said was that the dome light should be coming on automatically. The manual shows the dome light with a forward-placed button and a button behind the light, But mine actually has two buttons that are forward from the light, and I have no idea what the passenger side button is supposed to control, which has some kind of little graphic and the word "off". I fiddled around with all of these buttons and was not able to get the dome light to come on automatically when I opened up the car.

But here's the strange thing. On the third night of getting into a dark car I called the dealership which was still open and they said to bring it in and they'd help me figure it out. When I got there, I got out of my car, closed the door and locked it up, and unlocked it just as a test to make sure that I could recreate the problem. The freaking dome light came on when I unlocked the car! I was not able to re-create the problem, and I was exhausted, so I just got back in my car and drove home. They were busy in the dealer service area anyway and since I couldn't re-create the problem which I know they require, I just gave up for the night.

So I'm still in the dark, so to speak! I have no idea what's going on here. Comes on sometimes, doesn't come on other times. Any ideas?

Hey there,

How frustrating! The next time you take your Focus in for an oil change or other scheduled maintenance, tell the Service Advisor about the dome light so they can take a look. It may be something as simple as a loose connection. If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to me via PM; I'm happy to see how I can help.

Have a great weekend!

Well my experience is that if the problem's not happening when I'm there (because it didn't happen when I took it there the other night), they won't do anything. I've already had that experience with them twice before :(

(I mean, I get it, but it's a big inconvenience for me to go there for nothing)

I've noticed this since I bought the car. I think it has something to do with the buttons on the overhead dome light. Sometimes it comes on, sometimes it doesn't. Hopefully someone will chime in who figured it out - there are some determined people on this site... This drives my youngest child crazy because the booster seat he is in has a back that is too square for the seat, so when he climbs in, the seat will shift and block the seat belt just enough that he can't buckle in by feel.

Maybe the Ford customer service reps who frequent the site will have a solution.

Between the two buttons in front of the light towards the car,one is to turn on all the inside dome lamps...the other to completely turn off all of them even with the doors open. The big button on the backside of the front dome lamp is for the front light only. I know my experience was if you have the domes set to " off" and press it again while the door is open it will not come on . You have to close all doors and when you reopen it they will come one . Hope that makes sense ,sitting on the toilet typing this on my phone !

I haven't messed with any of the dome buttons since the dome light did come on last evening. So by the above poster's theory, If I don't touch those buttons again, my domelight should come on every time from now on.

Okay, I just went out to my car. It's still dark this morning. I pressed the unlock button once. Nothing. I pressed it again. Nothing. I relocked it. I pressed the unlock button again, and then twice, but a little bit faster this time. The dome light came on. I relocked it. Then I pushed the unlock button again once. The dome light came on.

WTH!

Seriously, I don't need to be playing musical car-unlock just so that I can get the lights to come on (or not) so that I can feel safe getting inside (or not).

Somebody has to fix this thing. I work too many late nights.

And so the universe seems to be on my side tonight. When I unlocked my car at 9 PM, the dome light came on. After pushing the unlock button only once.

Who knows what's going on. I wonder could it have anything to do with opening the hatch? I did open the hatch this morning.

This is crazy that I'm trying to distill down every interaction with this car to make sense of something that doesn't make any sense.

More weirdness here. Last night, went to my car, hit the open button twice - no lights. Opened hatch, no lights. Closed hatch, then went to enter car, no lights. I didn't touch any buttons or anything. Drove home, opened door to get out, no lights. Locked car via fob. Went back out later to go to the Y, pressed button twice, lights came on. They stayed on when I opened the door, faded out when I closed the door.

There doesn't appear to be any consistency in how this works.

Mood roof or no moon roof?

I have mine set to only have the footwells light up... I personally like not having my entire car light up when I unlock it, but that's my personal preference and beside the point.

I have a moon roof and my light controls are above my head and seem to work as they should, but I now wonder if its an issue with cars without a moon roof possibly...?

In my car you either set the button to on or off to turn on with the doors/entry... And then there's a second button just for my side done light.

"Doom" light, same problem. I believe it's a program glitch. Dealership told me the car goes into a sleep mode to conserve energy. Power to the control module for the dome light goes off. What a crock! That's not the case because, when I do not lock my car door, no matter how long the car sits, the dome light always comes on when the door is opened. No conserving energy there! Contacted Ford Customer Service. I'll post there response.

Doom dumb dome light!

Yea, there is the work around in getting the light on, but, the fact remains that I did not buy a new car to put up with this. It's not real serious I know, but, Ford has the responsibility to make it work all the time just like all the other cars on the road. Once again, on page 125 of the Owner's Guide it reads that the light is to come on when the door is opened. Period! I'm going to hold them up to that. Apart from that, and not getting 40 MPG, I enjoy the car.[driving]

Okay leadfoot... [grinking]

I agree- this doom light thing is really annoying. Next time I'm in for service, they are going to get rid of the rattle in my instrument gauge cluster and fix the doom light. There's no rhyme or reason to when it goes on, and when it doesn't.

Followup. Since I took the car in a couple of days ago my light has been coming on. [clap] The mechanic didn't say anything about doing anything to the car. ?[scratch] They weren't even going to give me a receipt or trouble ticket. Told the service rep I wanted something in writing to take with me. He wrote me up a report. Called Ford customer service. Lady told me the dome lights on new cars arrive at the dealership turned off and have to be turned on during the car prep at the dealership. She is going to call me back in 3 days to check up on the car. I don't have a clear picture of what's going on but if it's fixed, great. Will be checking on it all weekend. [doorpeek]

Follow up to follow up

[?|] This is getting good. Since I got the car back from the dealer the dome light is working but now the passenger side foot well light doesn't work. [thumbd] I don't know what's going on, but in the end it will be all right. We're testing out the equipment for them. They should pay us.

Dome Light

Here are constants with this problem in my car:
1. Passenger footwell light never comes on.
2. Drivers footwell light always come on.
3. If car is left unlocked, dome lights and drivers footwell light always come on.

Rarely, the dome has come on when the car has been locked after sitting overnight. Perhaps a half dozen times in 6 months.

Has anyone else had these same constants? [?]

Hi ronkoe,

I want to step in here and see how I can help. Send me your information via PM so I can get to work. I'll need your VIN, mileage, preferred servicing dealer, daytime phone number, and full name.

Thanks,

Dome light

Thanks Crystal, but I have been in contact with Jean from Ford and I'm taking the car back in for service tomorrow. She says the car needs a reset done and the mechanic knows what to do. So, I hope my next post will be a positive one cause after months of this I've reached the annoyed stage even though this problem is not very serious. Hope for the best. [driving]

Dome light done right!

[^] OK. Got the Focus back from the shop. Passenger footwell bulb was bad and replaced. They did a reprogram of the body control module (BCM). Said that will fix the dome light malfunction. Apparently there is an issue with some of the Focus vehicles's dome light. We'll see if the light comes on in the morning. And the morning after, and...after. My only concern and question now is, how the BCM got out of program. Time will tell. Hope for the best. It will be good to have it fixed just like a normal car. [:D] [driving]

Dome light.

OK. It's been about 10 days since I got my car back. Dome light has gone on every time. [cool] So, I guess it's fixed. I'll not post again unless there is a problem. Ford is trying hard to build a good product for the consumer and to make things right when things go wrong. That's how I look at it anyway. I hope they continue to build quality products and not cut corners.
