Alrighty, so there are always debates about the best mods to increase HP but what are the best mods to increase MPG? Any thoughts?

hard to say....all the mods that i installed decreased my MPG......even CAI and all that jazz....but you can always put some adjustable cam gears on and tune it to be the most eficient for you

^^^thats what i keep telling myself to do and usually can do it for 10 mins then i get on it and cant stop because i love the sound of my exhaust

drive slower. i know its hard , but really who the hell cares about millage. i pownd my zetec into the grownd and still get 23mpg. thats good.

I have found that before I put on my CAI and exhaust I rarely got on the throttle but after I put them on I am on the throttle much more but yet get the same milage, so there has got to be some MPG gain there.

If you really want good MPG drive on the freeway in no traffic everywhere you go, LOL.

Anything that increases torque in the normal cruising RPM range should help mileage. I have seen dyno charts that show the JBA shorty header improves mid range torque. I suspect that a free flowing intake and exhaust would improve MPG, due to lower pumping losses. I also suspect that a lower air dam will improve MPG by reducing the amount of air swirling around under the car. I am pretty sure that synthetic oil will help some too. Make sure that your tires are inflated properly and that your plugs and plug wires are in good condition. Do not remove the EGR.

I am trying to get my average MPG over 30 without spending too much money. I am planning to do some of the above items this spring. I have a used JBA header and SVT front lip. I have already modded my airbox for increased flow by adding an SVT air snorkel and removing the resonator.

I think a performance tune might help MPG too, but the savings may be offset by requiring premium fuel. It still reduces total number of barrels imported though.[cheers]

you can get a tune^^ and still run 87 octane with the xcalII

mpg

yea ive been trying the acetone the last few tanks. its really hard to measure the mileage benefit, youd have to log for a while to eliminate other variables. Ive been getting good gas mileage tho but I always have really. Ive mostly been using it as a cleaner. i get 30-37 depending on if i drive in the city. I always get better mileage with my 18s on also b/c of the gearing change.

one easy way to improve your mileage a little is to make sure youre using non ethanol gas. it seems like they using it everywhere now tho.

Buy a boost/vacuum gauge and install it where you can monitor it as you drive. (insert stupid people laughing here)

The state of vacuum or pressure has the most to do with how much fuel your engine needs to accelerate or hold a steady speed which relates to how far the throttle is open. The further the throttle is open the less vacuum you will see. So it is a cheap way to visually watch your fuel mileage. Actually in car fuel monitors operate the same way, but they use the voltage from a MAP sensor.

And as mentioned above, things that open up the engine and cause less restriction will also benefit fuel economy.

FYI, I've pulled 50mpg with my car a few times on long trips. I average 30mpg on a zetec with 132,000 miles, chip race header full exhaust 65mm tb, 70mm Mass air cam gears and 87 octane fuel. Dyno's out at around 130 to the wheels. So you can have a quicker car and still get economy out of it.

the shift lite is crap. i read something where they followed this lite for the entierty of the gas tank and it gave an extra 1-2mpg. thats really not that good.

honestly the money that you spend non mods tring to get better MPG, you would be better off just buying gas! if you want to modd without hurting MPG then thats diff.. in which case an intake, exhaust, good tune, adj cam gears. and a light right foot. some lightweight rims would help too... or any other lightweight components.

are you talking about E85 ? I wasnt aware the focus could run on E85. Its a joke anyway, you get worse mileage and end up using more.

I meant the 10% mix....but yeah same concept less power = worse mileage and it doesnt cost much less...maybe 5-10 cents a gal difference

39 MPG highway....

I have been really PO'd with the gas prices lately. So Im working hard at improving my mpg.

Im buying a Scan Gauge to help me out. But meanwhile I run 40 psi in the tires..harsh ride but a nice 2-3 mpg improvement. I replaced my wornout suspension with the svt...so the cars lower...I hope this helps with mpg...dont know though. I have headers, svt exhaust, and cai which will help. Currently I easily average 32 city/highway and can squeak out 35 if I try hard. Highway with drafting and staying around 60-65mpg I get 38-39 mpg. It is a 5 speed I short shift and accelerate pretty slow.

Im looking for a Honda Insight....damn hard to find right now.

I always get 34-37 mpg, combined in my 2003 ZX3.[ Zetec 5 spd. ] As has been mentioned, nothing, nothing , is going to get better mpg than changing your driving HABITS ! Make sure car is properly tuned, tires pumped up to max , [ or a little over ] , & did I mentioned changing your driving habits ?

Whenever I see posts like this, I think something must be wrong with my car (same car as above). If I drive like a granny (coast up to lights, shift early, 70 MPH max on hwy...) I average 28-29 mostly highway. Even if I drive it hard, the MPG barely changes. It may go down to 27-28. I actually got 26 mpg on a highway trip last summer with the A/C on. My wifes Taurus gets 26 hwy with the A/C on.

My car runs great, is mostly stock, and the EGR is working. What else could be wrong? Is anything wrong? It is only rated 22/29 MPG by the new ratings.
