Automatics, BEWARE! Recall 12B37 (Update PCM, TCM and ABS Modules)

I'm pretty angry this evening. I'd been considering not taking my Focus in to get the work done, but the guy who sold me the car called me up and insisted I get it done. Worried about my warranty, I waited a long time but eventually I obliged and today the work was done.

Worst.
Decision.
Ever.

I drive in Sport more than 50% of the time. It's always been very smooth and relatively quick when shifting, as well as smooth shifting down if done properly. Well now, shifting down in the lower gears, and when coming to a stop the car feels like it's about to stall and it lurches pretty badly. Shifting is extremely slower, and the delay from second to third is a good two seconds after physically shifting with the button.

Long story short, I'm pissed. I'm going to the dealer Tuesday and I'm going to ask them to undo whatever they did, this is absolutely unacceptable.

I love my Focus, and it was perfectly fine before....Ford managed to make a problem out of nothing.

Does anyone have any advice or similar experience? I've read here and there of people noticing substantial fuel economy drops. I haven't driven enough to notice yet.

(Fun fact: Driving in D feels worse than before too, but not nearly as bad.)

It sounds like the sport mode that isn't.
Maybe 'S' stands for Slushbox.

The PCM was reset so it may need some time to learn fuel trims, etc.

If the work was performed in the last couple of days, I would suggest to give it a bit of time before making a judgement.

I am going driving 2 hours north tomorrow and two hours back on sunday so hopefully after that. Truly, honestly, I am praying you're right. Drove all day today after getting it done and saw no improvement. Serviceman mentioned it should only take 50 or so km of city driving for everything to set in, but I just didn't expect it to be SO bad.

I have no real issues with my transmission post-update except I have an odd occurrence whenever I drive with cruise control, happens most frequently at 50mph, but occasionally I'll be driving, just straight no bumps no hills, etc. and the car will "hiccup" the tach will kind of jump and then it goes back to normal, all in a split second. Can't figure it out, hasn't been harmful, but it's just annoying.

Wait it out for atleast 2,000 miles he says. Sure, I'll just grin and bear almost stalling and jerky shifting for 2,000 miles. I'm pretty sure some of you are just here to be smart asses at this point. Regardless, I already stated what the dealer told me, and that I will wait until after the weekend to make a final decision. But I'm sorry, you don't bring someones car in for changes and then release it to them and neglect to tell them it's going to drive like complete ass for "2,000 miles". Just no.

Another thread about this[facepalm]

If you would have read any of the other threads about this, very few cars have actually had real problems after this update. Everyone else who drove the car off the lot and came straight here to complain has pretty much been happy. Don't get me wrong, there have been a few with real issues, but just playing the numbers you are probably safe.

Except for the hyper-milers. Most of them complain because they can't get into sixth fast enough.

Outside of that, just give it a few tanks. Try to run it in D, S, and S+ and change it up often so that the car can learn a bunch of different parameters. Don't try and hypermile only or race only or do anything exactly the same all the time. You should be back to normal in 3 tanks, then just drive normal.

I know, a person shouldn't have to do this. But all this does is speed up the computers learning. And this is a continual thing. Any time you have a battery disconnect or master reset, you will be back in the same boat. I do a lot of testing on my car, and one day after multiple dyno pulls my car drove retarded for a whole week. It apparently thought that I was some super-awesome-racer-dude that needed to drive like that everywhere.

The only other 'major' flaw is that it takes the car a while to learn how to select the proper gear for a large decel+90 degree+ turn. I started using S+ to avoid the transmissions confusion and only recently re-attempted it in D. It did relearn how to make the turn nearly correctly most of the time.

Take a deep breath, calm down, and use the search[thumb]

Yeah sorry, I've kind of given up on searching for threads on the forum as they show up blank.. can't really explain that, whole nother issue.

Honestly though, I just don't see why this "fix" needed to be done. If it was just about rolling backwards on hills, any idiot can keep his foot on the brake. I was misinformed by my dealer telling me it was for efficiency reasons... my own fault for not actually looking into it.

It had to be done to appease the 99 percentile that were having issues with the previous programing. You are clearly in the minority here.
Come back and tell us how you feel about things in 1000 miles or so.
As it stands this thread is pretty ridiculous.

I have 10,650 miles on mine with the update. I bought my car in Early May 2012, so I drive mine like no other. I think I had a little over 2,000 miles on it when I got the update done. After I got the update done, I didn't drive in a pattern. I went through the cars RPM range and at times romped on it and a couple of high speed runs. It has moments of a rough shift, but other than those rare moments, its buttery smooth. It takes time and mileage and it will be smooth. If you think the DCT in our Focus is rough, you have never ridden in a Smartcar.

I had nearly 8k on my car and hated the transmission. I was seriously considering trading the car in for something else. When I finally decided to go address the TSB. I'm so happy I waited and did the flash. To me it feels like a new car. Shifts are faster and no more earthquakes at low RPM. I kept it in sport mode in the city so it wouldn't race to 6th all the time. Now I keep it in D and just go. I've had maybe one or two instances where it was out of the right gear since the flash. Compared to it happening daily I'd say it's well worth it.

May 25 2012 Build Date / TSB - DCT

Hey Guys & Gals :

If my build date is May 25, 2012 would my car already have the latest bug fixes in place from Ford ?

I have not had any issues other than the "getting used to it" grumblings at very slow speeds. Really getting on it on the highway this transmission rocks.

Thanks for any input..............Dave

Since your build date is several weeks after the release of FSA 12B37, you probably do have the latest updates.

The easiest way to be sure is to check your VIN on the Ford ETIS site at: http://www.etis.ford.com/

Any open field service actions should show on your vehicles page.

yeah your basically starting from scratch, when a reprogram is done all adaptive learning strategies are erased, and when the abs reprogram is done the pressure sensors and switches are needed to be relearned too (through ford IDS) ive done plenty of these at work (working at ford) and i have felt harsh shifting right after they are done but havent had any complaints, they do relearn but it takes time

12B37 Service procedure:

"Since the reprogramming involved with this Field Service Action will NOT clear the adaptive tables, the transmission adaptive learning procedure is NOT required for this program."

thats bs, when you reprogram the pcm the tcm goes through automatically right after, even if it didnt the car feels basically brand new and needs to be relearned, im not trying to argue just putting it out there, but this reprogram is for people who "think" there is something wrong with the car since its basically built on a manual trans, but yet again ford needed a recall to give customers the "piece of mind".

so if it didnt clear the adaptive tables, besides relearning the abs sensors why does the car need to be relearned? clearly after you drive it the trans shifts funny, dude honestly after working at ford for 2 years now, some of the recalls are total bs and are due to lack of engineering, like on the new escapes besides the fuel line jumper on the 1.6 ecoboost, the center console side panel replacement, me and 2 of the other techs put the new and old ones together, no difference just a letter difference in the part number, they just dont want to saw to retuck the carpet under the side panel yet again they need to give customers peace at mind.
