2012 Park Assist Fault

Good day everyone!

Having some troubles with the park assist on my car, its getting pretty annoying to say the least. First and foremost, I believe that when you purchase any vehicle, all said standard and add ons should be in constant working order. Heres my story;

Since mid December the park assist and subsequent parking sensors have been on the fritz. I have washed the car to clean out all the crud that could be accumulating in or around the sensors and I still get the fault message. The system will reset when the car is turned off and then restarted, only to fail again after a short while.

I have had the car in for service, they had changed a parking sensor and advised me that was the issue, great! Left the dealership, drove home and experienced no problems. The next day, washed the car, as soon as I left the wash it failed on me again. On a freshly cleaned car?!

Let me tell you that I'm beyond aggravated about this. I don't always use the park assist, only it the spot is pretty tight and the car does a fantastic job. However, as for the proximity sensors, I rely on greatly especially reverse parking on my driveway or turning into a tight parking spot. I am not content in having it work a certain percentage of the time, I paid for it and expect it to work when I need it to.

Has anyone had problems with theirs messing up? To add to this, I've also had a problem with the door handles on the car. One handle had to be replaced due to it not unlocking the car. As you are familiar, keyless entry has a touch based sensor on all the inside part of the door handles. Once again, its an option that I paid for and expect it to always be functional. The handle they replaced has not given me problems since.

One more to add to this, my car has just under 25k. Over the last three months its seen a dealership more than I or any one of you would like to see one. I've had the water pump, thermostat, fan housing and fan all replaced due to malfunctions. Driving to work one day I noticed the temperature getting cool, almost at work an alarm sounded with a warning on the dash telling me to pull over safely due to the engine over heating. Get to work, pop the trunk and noticed that ALL the coolant had drained.

The upsetting part of all this, the park assist is one of the first questions asked about my car when people ride in it for the first time. They most often ask, "Is this that car that parks itself?" to my disappointment I have to answer that it is, but it doesn't work right now! As for the coolant system, I was happy to tell people that it wont require any service or fill up for 130k

Hoping someone will be able to shed some light on this

Thanks!

That park assist is garbage... I have heard nothing but bad things about it, not to mention the pics of all the dented and scratched bumpers and side panels. Sorry to hear that your car is having all these problems, you would think something that cost so much should work like its suposed to.

Cooling system fault seems to be dealer service related since you've had repairs to it. Either they fixed the wrong thing, or didn't make the repair correctly. I find it strange that all your issues have been cooling system related, but it's not been fixed. I think the problem was diagnosed incorrectly, and that dealer is grasping at straws to fix the problem.

Good luck with the parking assist. I'll be there in 15k miles with the CMax.

I would bet the op is having some sort of water leak into the wiring of the sensors. If washing the car is the problem, then IMO obviously the issue is water shorting out some sensors. The connection are no longer watertight. At least one of them is not anyway...
Stuff all the connectors with spark plug cap grease.. Dielectric grease... Use a good one. the Ford product is very good. It will keep the water out.

Personally, I think the park assist is fantastic.

The only issues I've ever had with it not working well is if I'm not lined up well in the beginning (like I changed lanes right in front of the spot or something) or if the car in front of the spot is super far from the curb. But it's just a car... how is it supposed to know that there's a bunch of snow and everyone else is parking like idiots?

It's not laziness... it's convenience. I came from an SUV and I can parallel park just fine by myself. Strangely enough, I can parallel park my roommate's Charger better than he can...? But as someone who lives in the city and parallel parks several times a day it's really freaking nice to not have to do it manually. It's darn close to perfect every time.

I think it's just a natural aversion to improvements in technology. I'm sure the same argument came from a select few when cruise control was a new 'thing'. I mean, why use cruise control when I can control the speed of the car by myself?

I haven't used my park assist much (mainly just showing friends), but it's been great every time I have used it. I definitely don't think it's a 'mandatory' or 'needed' addition, but I think it's pretty neat. Not only is it neat, but the fact that it's offered on a compact, non-luxury, <$30k car is even better.

Park assist generally works great. The only issue I have is how far it wants you to pull forward before putting the car into reverse. Half the time I can't back up because the guy behind me is on my ass.

I totally agree that Park Assist works great. I have used it numerous times and it always acts as expected. If someone is dumb enough to not read the manual and understand that you have to apply the brakes at the end, then they deserve to smash up their car. I really wouldn't be making statements that Park Assist is worthless when the basis of that observation is from an idiot using it.

Im sorry if I offended any of you, that was not my intention. Was just giving my personal opinion and thoughts from what I have seen. If it works for you then thats great and im happy for you. I am sure my friends was faulty, hence him getting it fixed by ford but it was his fault for not paying attention. He is young and nieve and did not want to listen to me when I told him its not perfect and he needs to pay attention. I would never have a need for park assist so for me it is just a waste, for others who my really need it then I guess use it till your hearts content. I just wanted to be clear that I was not trying to insult any of you guys/gals in any way.
