Hi all.

This is a long shot but I feel as if I've come to a dead end.

I got home from work over 2hrs ago and I go to shut off my 2012 Ford Focus Ti via the Push Button START/STOP and it will not turn off! This is the weirdest thing I've ever seen happen with this car. It's like the T1000, it just won't die!

I have tried putting the car in park w/parking brake up and down. Nothing. Dropped it into Neutral w/parking brake on. Nothing.

I called Ford Road side assistance and they aren't very knowledgeable with the mechanics of the car - strange huh? They did call a tow truck and their mechanic suggested I walk away from the car w/key fob and it should shut down on it's own.

I took three separate trips out. Each longer than the other and more further away from the vehicle and I come back to see it's still on.

Dealerships are closed here in Toronto at 12:39am so that isn't an option right now.

Another suggestion was to disconnect battery (I don't know how to do that) but I was also told it probably won't kill the car because the car is on and already running off the alternator. Car also has more than half a tank of gas so letting it run all night in an underground garage isn't a very good option.

I don't know what else to do. Has anyone experienced an issue like this before?

TL:DR version = Car won't turn off when I push STOP button. It's been running for the past two hours. Walked away from car with key fob approx. 5miles/10kms. and come back to see car is still on.

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Heh, I actually tried pulling one. It was the Ignition one under the glove box. #78 to be exact. Nada. It was a wild stab in the dark though anyways.

How long did you hold down the button to stop? I seem to remember another car make that wouldn't stop unless you held it down for more than a few seconds.
I did try that too actually. I tried multiple pushes. Push and held for 3 seconds then even 10 seconds. Nothing.

It's like the push button is completely dead.

I was searching some more and came across this thread...

Doesn't seem like the issue was resolved though.

If you pop the hood, you should see the battery box and battery. Yes, the car is running off of the alternator, but usually a blip of the throttle with lights and everything you can think of 'on' will bog the load down enough to kill the engine.

And of course; fuses are a great solution! Fuel pump, injectors, maybe even the ECU.

Another 'desperate' solution would be to open up the airbox (where the filter goes) and carefully take a rag and 'suffocate' the engine by blocking the intake. Maybe do that with one hand while grabbing the throttle on the engine with your other hand and giving it some gas. Kind of 'snuff' the engine out.

Ultimately though, if a tow truck is coming; you're not using much fuel idling and it might be best just to wait for them!

EDIT: Nevermind, I see you got it figured out!

Oh man! I'm going to be such a wreck tomorrow. It's going to be a long day and I'll be running off very little sleep. Once again, thanks for all the help!

I did pull the battery cable and as soon as I did all kinds of warnings popped up. "TPMS fail", "Hill park assist fail", "Engine malfunction." Ah, good stuff. The power on the electronics was still on though. I'm guessing it takes a bit for those to die...?

I'll be waking up in four hours to take it to the dealership tomorrow. I just pray it starts and I can get a loaner car. I have a motomaster battery booster charged and ready for what I suspect will be a dead battery in the morning.

Oh, someone mentioned something about bluetooth and a phone possibly messing things up. Funny, I just added my new Galaxy Note 3 to SYNC when I was leaving work and when I got home is when this issue with the push button start/stop began. Maybe just a strange coincidence.

Just last night I was talking to a friend and I was giving a lot of credit to Ford for heading in a good direction. After this, I'm about ready to trade this car in!
Maybe what he said was true, "American cars are shht!"

You have a lot of electronics on that car. Things are prone to fail. It's the unfortunate truth! Often the very high end, high dollar cars are some of the least reliable. Having new and unproven technology sometimes comes with the territory.

I'm still excited about where Ford is headed, even with the reliability issues they've had.

Hello Techwarrior,

I'd like to put you in touch with your regional customer service manager, who'll work with you and the servicing dealer on a resolution. Please send me a PM with your full name, daytime phone number, VIN, mileage, and dealership.

That is a weird defect.

My Focus ST with intelligent access and push button start has never failed to shut off with a press of the off button, even while moving to simulate an emergency shut down.

However I've only got around 9700 miles on the car so far.
