Bought this car new and has been the most dependable car ever owned. With 81k on the speedo the probs are beginning to haunt me. This is our spare car and I need it in case our other two Fords go down as we live way out in country. Was driving to town one day and it QUIT running. I had just driven it day prior for a quick trip to town. There was a bad odor of burned electrical almost like fertilizer in a sense inside the car. Weird huh? It's been parked for a few months since and now have time to work on it. YES, I've searched the site for possible match of symptoms and what to test ect...
History...
Virgin car all the way with no mods radio nothing...pure stock 2001 ZTS Sedan 4dr
The typ PCV hose failure was found & repaired
Ignition coil was replaced
Brakes oil trans filters batteries tires...all typical items replaced
Recently, the batt warning light will go on & off randomly. Caught it while ON one day while hood up and batt/alt still showed charge at +14v -ignored
Last summer it had a cooling issue (caught in time) replaced the fan resistor and head coolant temp sensor -solved
After the cooling issue, the brake master cylinder went out and was replaced. NOTE...fuse block was gently secured out of the way during repair.
Recently before the shut down the inside A/C blower fan will only work on HIGH combined with A/C quits functioning with fan ON
NOW...
Batt is very low volts will not keep a charge. I used a jumper box to help supply power during FORscan data gathering only a U1262 fault found -can't comm or run tests
Radiator fan#2 is stuck on HIGH with key on even though car has not run for months. Pulled the fuse to make it stop with key on
Instrument panel has dashes where the miles display
PATS light slow blinks like normal then goes OFF with key & spare key inserted.
Everything has power except when key turned to START the starter doesn't work
Test wire to starter solenoid shows it works. Test done thru access in wire connector by batt
Tested all relays & fuses are good
Sanded clean all ground wire connections from batt to chassis and put back together
One skinny ground wire from NEG batt post seemed tight barely having enough length to reach NEG terminal. MAYBE broken inside and can't see?
No corrosion on batt or wires
Looked behind glove box for clues around ecm and dash for burned corroded anything -nothing stands out being bad
Future...
Today, remove the instrument cluster looking for any clues. That burn elec smell has to come from somewhere...right?
DL Haynes online manual to get wire schematics. This was a big help with our Explorer
HOPE someone here will reply maybe help me what has failed and what to test....It's gotta be something typical thing with these models.
