I have a 14 and am already getting wear. I have just been using leather conditioner once a month and am hoping it doesn't get worse.

Yeah well You guys see the weather stripping around the door seal. The thing looks like it wore out. How, maybe getting in and out? Im fairly large guy. The stealership said that's not normal wear and tear. I said, large guys cannot drive the car? After I said those words, I said to the SA, be careful and choose your words carefully....Covered under warranty.

I use Lexal cleaner and leather application. Works wonders. The leather is not of the greatest quality. After a few applications, it will look very nice. I use 3011 protecturant on the dash and tires. Trick to 301 is using a horsehair brush and that really creates a shine after you apply it.

I have leather seats in my 2013 Focus that are about 2 years old. The driver seat side bolster is wearing pretty quick. Would this type of wear be covered under the Factory Warranty, or is it normal wear?

Hi guys,

Your dealer will be in the best position to determine if something will be covered under warranty.

For reference, from your Warranty Guide:

Damage Caused by Use and/or the Environment
The New Vehicle Limited Warranty does not cover surface rust, deterioration and damage of paint, trim, upholstery, and other appearance items that result from use and/or exposure to the elements. You, as the owner, are responsible for these items.
Please keep me in the loop with what your dealer says.

Does anyone know how often you should use leather conditioner to make sure it doesn't get worn out?
I have a cleaner/conditioner i use from mquires. i use it every time i clean the interior, so like once a month probably.

Thanks for the replies! I am a larger framed guy, and maybe it is just extra wear from exiting the seat. This is the first time I have had Leather seats. I'll get some cleaner/conditioner and see if it helps.

Probably this. Also could be if you wear jeans often they create more friction when rubbed against the leather. I have the same seats on my 12 and never condition the leather, I use VLR cleaner about every other month.

No visible wear on mine.

Well I just noticed this same wear on my driver's seat today, 14' with 10500 miles. I'm a fat man, I'm not kidding anyone, 6' and 440. I drive it daily and only wear scrubs, so I wouldn't think it would cause that much frictional wear. All I have to say is Ford "use" to cover this type of thing for the first 12 mos/12000 miles and I hope they still do for a car costing over 20K. We shall see.

It has nothing to do with the quality of leather and everything to do with how you sit. When you have seats with side bolsters (even though these are mild compared to most cars) you have to be careful of how you enter and exit the car.

You can't just slide in like you are used to, it is better to step into the car and then try and sit down as straight as possible. I usually go: Right foot in, sit booty down square in seat, bring left foot in.

It takes some getting used to and breaking the habit of sliding in to your car, but you will see significantly less wear when you do it this way.

This guy does a better job of explaining it than me.

This^^^^^^^^^ I've changed out quite a few seat foams & covers before, seems like lot of ppl including women just slide their butts in the seats vs just planting their butts in. Yea some of the material is a cost cutting grade. Will say the leather in the KR's (king ranches) wears like iron, color fades thou.

One of my previous Fords leather wrapped steering wheel was replaced under warranty when wear appeared on it after 30,000 miles.
It is what is 'expected' wear. Failure of a product like a leather seat cover to stand up to 'normal' use means it can be replaced under warranty.
A LOT depends on other complaints of premature wear, and the specific dealer. Meaning the service dude. Once they say 'That is normal wear" You are screwed. Or, they say 'Yeah warranty item, you get it replaced free.'
One should always be on the good side of one's service tech.
Human being make these decisions. Some folks are hard case, some easygoing, or good day bad day situation. But usually once the decision is made, no changing it without a LOT of whining and jumping through endless hoops. (and forever after you are branded a PITA.)

It looks like it is caused by sliding in and out of the front seats.....IMO! Try using a BandAid patch on that corner to slow down the wear, or something along that line...!
