I started with almost $60k in debt. I laugh every time someone is like, (I can't afford to go to college.) Yeah. Okay.

How does one afford to pay for a bachelor degree, when most jobs require a bachelor degree? Everything I look at , even entry level stuff, requires a bachelor degree....
Loans, loans, loans. I just took a loan out on my 401K to pay off the last of my Sallie Mae loans. 4.25% > 13.75%

We hire alot of kids out of HS that are now in those "Bachelor Degree" positions.

um you're not supposed to be able to afford it?

thats the whole point, by getting you into a mortage worth of debt right after highschool before you even realize whats happening they are able to keep you so laden down with debt your entire life that you have no choice but to work shitty blue collar jobs your whole life just to make end meets, your big accomplishment in life will be spawning mini clones who will then proceed to do the same thing.

imagine if nobody had student loans/mortage debts? who would work shitty jobs for medium-low pay?

nobody.

not good for business, not good for economics, not good for politicians, not good for the multibillion dollar college industry.

I for one (and Kyle with me) can't wait till the college bubble pops and its not required.

as far as I'm concerned college is a complete joke and waste of time/money. every job I've ever gotten has been based on my connections rather than my education. Since college isn't making me more connections why am I throwing money away at it when I could be spending money in the real world making more connections? [dunno]

it seems like a lot of companies I encounter are starting to trend back towards this.

companies are starting to realize that it doesn't take 4 years of training to learn the skills required to do the jobs they want done and if they bring someone in out of HS, train them in house, and put them to work at a higher wage than flipping burgers etc they are likely to stay longer and be a better value overall to the company because they don't have the higher wage expectations that college graduates with a BS have.

Yup. And just like sully said, kids straight out of HS are getting those high requirement jobs.

If I go back to school this fall its gonna be computer related, or automotive.

Either one, I don't know which classes I've already taken can be used towards either. Private not much other than general ed ones

if you can't tell I hate college and everything about it.

although I do thoroughly enjoy higher education classes, I'll go to a solidworks class or a welding class or a business management class any day, even if they aren't on my list of required classes.

I have a really hard time forking over $1200 dollars for the "privilege" of sitting in a history of african-american literature class because someone, somewhere decided that would help me be a better business manager and that I needed it to get my B.S.

Exactly. All the general education ones are retarded. Wtf was middle and high school?

If college is necessary it should be only for the core classes needed for that certain job field. Not history, physics, all that bullshit

exactly.

lets get back to trade schools and apprenticeships.

seriously.

If I were graduating HS, I would do it old school route. Go to trade school, pick a trade. Get a cheap 2 year associates or Journey man's in something. Find an older guy that does what I do and is awesome at it. Work under him, take over company when he retires, or start my own. Could be anything, electrician, welder, etc. IT fields are a good one as well. There is a large gap in skilled tradesman out there.

I have a buddy who is my age, didn't go to college, works construction for Rockford Construction. He's a foreman for a crew. His brother went to Ferris State, got a bachelors in Construction Management, and works under him. (Not the family company either.)
