What Is Crankshaft Position Sensor Data Used For In SVT?

Title says it all. I have a 2004 5-door SVT.

The two wires pulled out of the crankshaft position sensor at the front right of the engine. The car now runs fine, where it would stumble and have very low power when the wires were kind-of-connected.

Any know what the SVT engine controller does with the data from the sensor? Are there any ill effects from having it disconnected?

Thanks!

Moved to General Tech Chat for the quickest answers.

Fits best here as a "repair" question.

Odd - crank position is the primary timing sensor, though you've still got a cam sensor. Crank sensor is usually considered vital for proper running (spark) and the two are used in concert for many of the ECU functions that check for proper operation.

Fix it, if you lose battery power and keep alive memory you may be stranded.

Crank sensor tells PCM when #1 cylinder at TDC and cam tells PCM which of two TDCs it can be. Used to set up spark timing and FI timing. You're running off past map now that PCM has defaulted to, it WILL catch up with you if you don't fix it.

Thanks for the knowledgeable advice.

Something must be intermittent either in the cable, connector or sensor, because when it was connected the engine sometimes ran very poorly until I repositioned the cable/connector. Now that the two wires have pulled out of the connector shell, there's no intermittent/inconsistent data and it runs just great.

Where's the camshaft sensor?
