Sync 3 CarPlay/Android Auto update?

I bought a 2016 Titanium Hatch about 3 months ago and was told by the dealership that the update would be out in summer. We all know that didn't happen and now its "this year". Well that is almost over. I just got off the phone with the SYNC department which told me a few things:

1) We don't know when it will be available so we can't tell you.
2) When it is updated the Sync3 will tell you. (is this true I haven't seen any updates since I got the car)
3) CarPlay will require hardware installation by the dealership which may or may not cost you anything but the SYNC team doesn't deal with hardware.(Huh? What?)
4) Only the dealership can tell me if it will or will not cost me anything because Ford doesn't have that information. (Again, WTF?)

I asked who I could get information on the hardware from and they responded with "Ford does not have this information you will have to contact a dealership".

I asked if they meant their team at Ford doesn't have it or Ford as a whole doesn't have it. They put me on hold and then after about 3-4mins the call was disconnected.

I feel like I am getting scammed as I could have purchased a lower trim level with out this and got an aftermarket CarPlay deck but the dealership insisted it would be available for me shortly. The run around on this is so damn frustrating. I hope to god it won't be like this if I have an actual major warranty issue.

Rule #1: Never trust a word out of a car salesmen's mouth. Not saying they're all crooks, but you MUST do your due diligence. Imagine buying a house and the current owner saying "Nah no termite problems. No need for an inspection." Exact same situation. Once the deal is done, anything not in writing never happened.

If an update did require additional hardware you can bet your ass that you're going to be footing the bill, warranty or not.

Hey Everyone,

I understand your frustrations of having to wait longer than anticipated for the update. The update is due to be released by the end of the year. Android Auto will only consist of a software update. Apple CarPlay will require a software update, as well as, a dealer installed hardware upgrade. The IVT department has not been informed of the cost for the hardware, but the dealers may possibly know. Your patience is much appreciated! To get CarPlay to work you will need SYNC3 v2.0 and a new USB. The USB is about $55 for a F-150, not sure if that part(GJ7Z-19A387-B) will fit a Focus. The current version of SYNC3 in the Focus is 1.1, it's a dealer install. My guess is we'll get CarPlay/Android Auto when v2.1 is ready, a merge of v1.1 and v2.0.

Cara, my dealer is as much in the dark as I am. At the time I began a 2016 lease for a Focus Titanium, I was assured carplay would be available by early summer. Really galls me no communication has been forthcoming from Ford about the nature of the delays, or about what to expect when CP eventually makes it into the 2016 models. I will remember this communication fiasco at the conclusion of my lease in 2019.

2stepbay,

I certainly understand your frustration of having to wait longer than anticipated. We haven't been informed of any changes, so the update should still be released by the end of the month.

Bummer that CarPlay update has been delayed so much and so long. At this point id be happy with being able to pair two phones to my radio through Bluetooth. I don't want to plug my iPhone in a have it charging all day on and off while I drive. FYI I have a work phone and a personal phone. I use my personal phone to stream music and work for work stuff. My 2010 cx7 allowed me to pair two phones at same time and use one for phone calls and one for streaming. Also I work out of my car all day.

Lincoln owner, but...

...I follow this thread because it's the most up-to-date I can find about the SYNC3 CarPlay/Android Auto update.

Just checked the Lincoln owner's site and it says a SYNC update is available to SYNC3 2.2! [goofydrunk] Downloading now and since I'm using Android and not iOS, I will be able to update shortly.

Update: System Upgrade took all of the 60 minutes it said it would. BUT, it is up now and running great! I've only used it with Android Auto, so I don't know how the Ford/Lincoln Audio/Nav/etc. have been updated (it did install a new version of the maps, and took awhile to update that), but so far no complaints.

i just did update to carplay/aa as well. took about 20 minutes using a usb 3 32gb flash drive. no hiccups during install thank goodness. My work phone is an android so ill be getting lots of use out of that phone during the day. At some point i'll order the usb connector needed for apple carplay. I messed with it for a couple minutes. seems to be pretty cool. guess ill find out how useful it will be when i go back to work after these next several days off.

I'm surprised we haven't had more activity on this. The ST, RS, Fusion, and F150 forums are lit up with tutorials like the one 2stepbay posted.

It looks like upgrading to Sync3 v2.2 is easy enough. If you're looking for CarPlay though, you need part HU5Z-19A387-A which was available as of last week, but with the explosion of new orders it now has a ~300 unit backorder, based on what I'm reading and what Ford WBL told me. They do predict units ordered right now will ship in first half of January, but that's only going to extend as more orders are made. Once you have the part, pry out your old armrest hub, disconnect the two usb cables underneath, and plug those into the new module and you're set.

Here's a question for @FordIVTteam : why the heck didn't Ford start producing extra stock of these USB modules anytime in the last 12 months? You've been advertising a software and hardware upgrade for thousands of 2016 models, and no one at Ford thought to produce extra hardware for the upgrade? The only people that even know about this hardware upgrade are hyper-aware forum users who are willing to risk an unofficial 2.2 software release, and Ford is still sold out by 300 units instantly? I try not to bitch and moan too much, but c'mon.

It does boggle the mind. [?|][?|][?|]

Installed the update on my 16 Focus Titanium, took about 15 minutes as I was already on 2.0 from a warranty replacement of the APIM a few months ago.

Installed it on my wife's 2016 Escape Titanium. Took about 45 minutes to upgrade her from 1.0 to 2.2. Have to do the USB upgrade for her iPhone to work, but she's fine with what she has for now.

I'm not real impressed with the Nav map update as it does have a number of errors in my local community. Would rather have kept the 114 map version than the 115. Not sure if I have to buy updates going forward or not, but Android Auto works fine and Google maps, while not as colorful as the Nav map, serves my purposes well enough.

so i was messing with dual phones paired to radio and running android auto. so what i have to do is first pair the phones to radio. then start streaming my music through my personal phone, then after the music starts, i can then connect my work phone and begin using android auto. Everything working fine so far. As a side note, i just ordered some 6.5 components as well for the front doors.

I'd guess (not working with Sync directly) that the reason there was no announcement about the update is that hardware isn't ready in large quantities, or that testing isn't done.

Sync 3 just launched on the second half of the fleet in MY 2017 and so I'd imagine the Sync guys have been quite busy with production issues and getting all that hardware and software sorted. Once the 2016 and 2017 as delivered issues get sorted and all the bugs get tagged and most of them fixed, then I'd expect to see a focus on updating the fleet.

This is typical automotive, current production is king. You need to make sure the stuff going out the door today is in the best shape. Update the other stuff later once production has settled into a rhythm.

So, obviously the FordIVT team isn't replying here, opting to bury their heads in the sand, but they're still online. Here was their private message answer to my questions about support and official release. Do with this information what you will.

"The SYNC 3 update has not been officially been released by Ford or Lincoln. The file that other owners are installing is not Ford supported and any issues with the vehicle after the installation will not be covered under warranty. I wish I had more info to provide you, but I'm unable to speculate when the update will be available."

...and...

"I'm unable to speculate if the update is the same software that the 2017 vehicles have built in already because it hasn't been officially released yet. There has been a SYNC 3 update floating around that people have been installing, but it is not a Ford supported update."

They don't seem to understand that this update appears to be available to Lincoln owners via their Sync accounts, and that it's still available for download via Ford servers.

It's clear this update works across all 2016 Sync3 models, but my only worry is that Ford won't provide any updates to this 2.2 build. As in, we'll be fine for now, but some update will become available (whether vitally necessary or just a perk), and they'll cut out anyone with this unofficial version of the software.

I mean they are pretty clear:

1. The update isn't released
2. Don't install and update that isn't official
3. If you install an unofficial update, you might be denied warranty coverage for any issues caused by it.

Just because it is released for some Lincolns and just because the hardware is "basically" the same, does not mean it has passed validation. Since Ford has to cover these updates via Warranty they want to be certain that the updates work correctly.

I understand people do not like waiting, but in reality it's what people should do.

My question is, with the update and Android Auto, do I have to have navigation installed in order to use Google maps or can it just run off of my phone? I'm tempted to download and install the "illegal" update but I have a really good warranty and really don't want to jeopardize nullifying it because I'm impatient lol.

I just purchased a Ford USB hub part # GJ7Z-19A387-B for my 2016 Focus SE and when I went to do the swap I noticed this new hub only has one micro USB port to accept the two USB cables from the console.

No way to piggyback the cables.

2016 Focus has two USB cables and separate power cable coming into the center console cubby USB hub.

One black USB cable goes to the SYNC3
One white USB cable goes to the USB port in front of the shifter.

Upon removing the old non-CarPlay hub I noticed it has two micro USB ports to accept the two USB cables.

When I connected one of the USB cables to the new CarPlay hub it immediately allowed CarPlay to work but the front USB port by the shifter was dead, won't even charge.

The part number on the old non-CarPlay part is GR3T-14F014-AB

Back to the dealership for another USB hub.
