I thought I would do this how-to on changing the clutch on an SVTF. So here we go..............

Things you will need: Tools, a Big friend, Jack stands, work lights and a hoist......maybe some coffee too.
Start here, Put the car on Jack stands and make sure it is secure.
Image

Disconnect and remove the battery.Drain your fluid out of the tranny.
Image

Remove the battery tray and intake(cover the throttle body as well) and remember where the ground wires go, you might need to remove a couple of them. This will give the wiring harness a little more room to move around.
Image

Pull this clip out of the hydraulic line that runs to the Slave cylinder. If you aren't replacing the slave cylinder( which would be dumb not to do), then save this clip.
Image

Disconnect the sway bar end links and yank the strut out. Also pull the brake caliper loose and hang it out of the way with wire.
Image

Use a 32MM socket and a pickle fork to remove the half shaft. A Pickle fork is a large tuning fork. Use it to pry between the half shaft and the tranny, it will pop out.

Now the fun begins!!! Get under the car and start cutting all the wires.........just kidding. Remove the cat/ORP/HFC, whatever you have. Then remove the header, you will need the extra room. Next, disconnect the shifter cables..........this is easy, just press the button and pull up.

Next is the starter..............13mm socket, 15 on the nut. 10 on the small wire, 13mm on the rest.

Disconnect the big gray main harness and two small clips on the tranny. One is white and one is black.
Image

Get the hoist, jack and your shit together............you're going to need it.
Hook the hoist up to the engine.
Image

If you can make something like this, do it, it will help to hold the tranny.
Image

Place a jack under the tranny and remove the dogbone mount.
Remove the tranny mount and gray bracket on tranny.
Image

Remove engine mount and slowly remove jack to see how well your hoist works.

There are 11 tranny bolts, all different length, but all 13mm. Remove them and label them. Place jack under tranny and apply a little upward pressure, maybe use a prybar to separate the engine and tranny.
Have your big friend put a strap around the tranny and hold pressure on it.
Image

Lower engine and tranny and be strong........

The tranny has to come out to wards the driver's side fender and flip it down, bell housing up.

Change your clutch, slave cylinder and anything else you want. Hopefully your slave cylinder doesn't look like this............

Image

New clutch!!! Make sure you use the guide and be sure to put the clutch in the right way. FW side stands for flywheel side.......do it.
Image

Now just reverse the rest and good luck!!! BTW, this is much easier when you do it two times in a row............really.

decent write up but why did you remove the whole header and struts
With the header out, I moved the engine towards the front of the car, to give me more room to roll the tranny out. I removed the struts to give me the extra 3 inches or so I needed to pull the half shafts. Otherwise you would have to disconnect the tie rod end and that wasn't an option on his car, due to the condition of the tie rod ends.

Great write up. That is more straight forward with better pictures than the all data steps!

Still hope I don't have to do this anytime soon.

I will post a picture of where the bolts are supposed to go when I get a chance. On my iPad now and I have no idea how to attach an image with it.

Hey man, just a HUGGGGGGGEEEEE Thanks for posting this up!!!

My SVTF has been a money pit and one thing after another since i bought it, barely been able to drive it. Rebuilt suspension and now have to rebuild the clutch. Thanks to this thread and some good friends I'll be able to do it! I can't afford $1000 for shop to do it so thanks!!!!!
