Sedan owners, watch for this. Potential wire failure in trunk.

Saturday I was out running some errands with my mother. We got back to the Focus, put our things in the trunk, hopped in, and went to drive off. Suddenly, the TRUNK AJAR warning came on, so I got back out to open and close the lid again, thinking it was just mistaken somehow. It wouldn't open. The key fob wouldn't open it, nor would the button on the trunk lid itself. I released it using the emergency release inside (by crawling in through the back seat opening) and shut it. Driving off, the warning came back on.

Upon getting home, the trunk still wouldn't open and the car was still convinced the trunk was ajar. After an inspection I found the culprit:

Cut wire. Notice how there's no loom or protection of any kind there? While it doesn't pass through metal (though it looks like it in the picture), it appears that over time the moving and folding of the wires as the trunk lid is opened and closed caused the wire to weaken, and it finally broke in half.

Today I drove it in to work to let a coworker who does electrical reconnect it - thus documenting the problem and avoiding any potential future warranty issues (thanks to Mike for fixing it, by the way!). As I was backing up into the bay though, he called out to say my reverse lights started flickering - and then they cut out entirely.

Following a repair of the wire, it and the rest were then taped up and covered in a section of wire loom, as they should have been from the factory. The reverse lights work again, the trunk opens as it should, and the warnings are gone from the cluster.

The rest of the wires were still in good shape but that one had had enough and split in two. So sedan owners, check to see if your wires are covered, and if not note that you could have a problem if one weakens like this one did.

I just checked my 2012 SEL and my wiring in the same area is just taped together with electrical tape - no wiring loom covering it. Mine appears fine though, no signs of damage.

I'm not sure if the wiring loom will do much anyway, my wiring has a tight bend in it which in your photos looks like the exact spot it broke.

Exact same thing here, I think it is a poor design that is prone to fail at some point. The more you open and close the trunk, the sooner it will fail. I think twenty's failure is just the tip of the iceberg.

Hi Twenty,

I'm having the same issue with my trunk lid not opening. Thought it was the fuse or the key fob battery, but no luck there... Took it to my dealer and they couldn't find the problem...

Can't view the links to your photos that you posted (blocked at work), but I'll try viewing them when I get home.

And I'll start looking at the wiring as well...

Thanks,

Dave

Thanks to Twenty I inspected the trunk wiring and found a broken wire as well. The wiring is not protected other than electrical tape. Routing of the wiring is mediocre at best. How and where the wires are mounted puts undo stress on them every time the trunk is opened and closed. Poor design...

Thanks a lot, Twenty! +1 Rep! I looked in my trunk and found that I'm in the early stages. The tape was pulling apart on mine, exposing the wires. It appears that there is enough slack in the routing for mine, but I think 1-2 years of stuffing my trunk a bit more than I should has done a little bit of damage. Some electrical tape will fix it for now; I'll be adding some loom later.

I think the mods should consider sticky-ing this so that other sedan owners can make an easy fix before it's too late for them.

Trunk light, License plate light.

We have a 2012 Ford Focus Titanium--
Our Focus failed inspection because our license plate light was out. The auto shop told us it was a unit and not just a bulb, that they hadn't seen one burn out before and "generously" offered to replace it for $150.
We politely declined.
I got on the phone to Ford, who told us we were out of warranty (2012 model and it's now Jan 2016). I was told this is not an owner serviceable part. The owner's manual stated the light should last. "for the lifetime of the vehicle". Customer service rep said we should take it to a Ford Service Center to determine the reason this happened. We can't know for sure but her wording made us suspect Ford was interested in somehow finding us at fault--in spite of the fact that this was supposed to be a lasting part----and leave us stuck with a hefty repair bill for what should be a 79 cent bulb. Ultimately this was not the problem but this IS a real Design flaw.

We noticed the trunk light was also not working anymore which made us hopeful that it might be nothing more than a burned out fuse.
I searched for a proper fusebox diagram.
The one in the owner's manual doesnt clearly show the location of the fuse for the trunk light or license plate light. If anyone has this info it might be of great help to someone. I STILL don't know where that fuse is.

Finally we saw this posting and immediately checked the wires in our trunk.
BINGO! Two wires were completely split apart (trunk light and License plate light) and a third one well on it's way.

A BIG thank you to Twenty, whose almost 3 year old posting gave us the answer we needed!

Isn't it so nice to know that the exact same issue that has plagued the cars since '00 has STILL not been fixed, in fact, moved from one side of car to the other and STILL not armored protection there, it actually looks like they have made it even MORE likely to occur on the later ones. In the '60s this would have been fixed after the first year.

Ford is absolutely desperate to sell more wire looms and dealership service there and why they don't fix a problem that has been in existence for 15 years + now.

Per post #22 pic how much do you think Ford pays people to make that harness in the Honduras?

People REALLY should look at the multiple problems Fords now have that they let go on for many years rather than trying to improve them to not be trouble, they simply don't look at that much anymore, less troublesome cars resulting in fewer parts sold. These Focus cars are full of issues like that.

I've had the exact same problem on '00 and '02 models.

Mine just started doing the exact same thing last night. I went to arm my alarm and it did the honk twice thing and the lights wouldn't turn off cuz I have em on auto. Well, I crawled through the trunk, which is annoying by the way cuz I have two car seats anchored in for my kids and then opened it and slammed it shut but it wouldn't open again. Finally just said screw it and turned the lights to off and started searching then this morning I came across this thread. Guess I gotta go look around at them wires in a few minutes. I was hoping it was just a fuse. When I opened the trunk though and checked the latch area it all looked alright and I tried to unlock the trunk with the button with the trunk opened and it would make the noise and work.
